In the early hours of 28 December local time, Israel fired multiple missiles from the Mediterranean Sea at the Syrian port of Latakia, causing massive explosions and fires, the Syrian state news agency reported. It was allegedly the second Israeli attack on the key port facility this month. The Syrian state news agency quoted a military official as saying that the Israeli missiles fired from the sea west of Latakia hit the port's container terminal, sparking a fire and causing major damage. Video posted on social media shows a huge explosion and fire at the port. Syrian state television showed footage of flames and smoke coming from the container terminal. Residential buildings, hospitals, shops and some tourist attractions near the port were reportedly damaged. According to the Syrian state news agency, a head of the Latakia Fire Brigade said the attack targeted a container storage area at the commercial port of Latakia, where containers contained petrol and spare parts for cars and machinery. A similar attack was reported on 7 December, when Israeli warplanes targeted the container terminal, sparking fires and explosions. A reporter for Al-Ikhbariyah TV in the area said the attack appeared to be on a much larger scale and that explosions could be heard in Tartus, another coastal city, more than 80 kilometres away, adding that ambulances had arrived at the scene, but it was still unclear whether there were casualties. Reports say the port of Latakia is an important port facility in Syria, through which most of Syria's imported goods are transported. Latakia Port is a commercial port in Syria, located on the Mediterranean coast in the northwest of the country, south of the port city. The port has a grain wharf, a general cargo wharf, a passenger wharf, an inner harbour east wharf, a north wharf, a north shore and a north jetty wharf, with a total length of approximately 3,500 metres and a water depth of 7-13 metres.
