Recently, US President Trump said that he believes there is no need to extend the trade deadline on July 9, and countries need to reach an agreement with the United States before this period to avoid being imposed higher tariffs.
"I don't think I need to extend it," he said in an interview with Maria Batiromo on Friday's "Fox News Sunday Morning Futures." He then added, “I can extend it too, it’s no big deal.”
Prior to this, Trump had said that the administration could “do whatever it wants” to the deadline, including extending or shortening.
July 8 is the deadline for the three-month moratorium on “reciprocal tariffs” implemented for many countries, when tariff rates for nearly 200 countries will return to the April 2 level.
July 9 is the deadline for the United States and the EU to negotiate a trade agreement. If no agreement is reached, the United States will impose a 50% tariff on EU imported products.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besent said: Trump may re-impose high reciprocal tariffs on 20 countries, or if the United States believes that the other party is negotiating in good faith, the tariffs in these countries may remain at 10%.
