Shenzhen Port is one of the most representative ports in the Pearl River Delta region. The eastern port area is located near the customary north-south route along the coast of China, with wide water area, good natural water depth, no silting, few obstacles, but poor shelter conditions, and large swell in the southerly wind season, which has a certain impact on berthing operations. The main container terminal is Yantian. Yantian Port is operated by Shenzhen Yantian Port Group, whose main business includes three areas: Yantian Port, Western Dachao Bay and Huizhou Port. Yantian Port area is one of the four deep-water international transit ports in China, and the single port container throughput ranks first in the country.

Dock operation: Lots of players

From the perspective of terminal operators, the Yantian Port area in the eastern port area is jointly operated and managed by two major operators, Yantian Port Group and Yantian International Container Terminal Co., LTD. Among them, Yantian Port Group is 100% controlled by Shenzhen State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, Yantian International is 71% owned by Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa Yantian Investment Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen Yantian Port Co., Ltd. holds the other 29%.

Shekou Container Terminal (SCT) in the Western Port Area is the first Sino-foreign joint venture professional container terminal in China, which is currently 100% owned by China Merchants (Shekou Container Terminal) Holding Co., LTD. Chiwan Container Terminal Limited (CCT) is also 51% controlled by China Merchants Port Group, 25% owned by Hong Kong International Enterprise Limited, 4% owned by Chiwan Shipping (Hong Kong) Limited and 20% owned by Haifeng Development Limited. Dachao Bay Terminal is 65% owned by Modern Container Terminal Co., Ltd. and 35% by Shenzhen Yantian Port Group Co., LTD.

In general, Shekou and Chiwan are the famous "Merchants Department", which is the western home port of Shenzhen Merchants Port, and Yantian Port and Dachawan Port are the ports of Yantian Port Group.

SCT: Shekou Container Terminals Ltd (SCT). Located on the east bank of the Pearl River Estuary, southwest of Shenzhen and 20 nautical miles from Hong Kong, it is the preferred "maritime gateway" for cargo owners and shipping companies to enter and exit South China. Established in 1989, SCT is the first Sino-foreign joint venture professional container terminal in China, owned by China Merchants International, a leading terminal operator in China, and Hong Kong Modern Container Terminals.

SCT is one of the four container terminals in Shenzhen Port. After years of development, SCT has become an international terminal with highly recognized terminal facilities and corporate management. It currently has nine deep-water berths, five dedicated barge berths, with a total length of 4,090 meters, and nearly 100 routes per week, which can provide 24-hour service 365 days for shippers and shipping companies.

CCT: Chiwan Container Terminal is located on the Nantou Peninsula in the west of Shenzhen, on the east bank of the Pearl River Estuary, only 20 nautical miles away from Hong Kong, with a unique geographical location, which is the "maritime gateway" connecting the rest of the world with the Pearl River Delta economic circle.

Chiwan Container Terminal is one of the four container terminals in Shenzhen Port. After 20 years of development, Chiwan Container Terminal has become an international professional container terminal with advanced facilities and perfect management. It manages a total of 9 berths with a total length of 3,400 meters, providing quality service 24 hours a day, 365 days a week for 40 ocean-going routes.

MCT: Shenzhen Mawan Port Co., LTD. (" MCT "). Mawan Port is located on the east bank of the Pearl River Estuary and on the west side of the Nantou Peninsula in the west of Shenzhen City. It is one of the deep-water wharfs with the most advantageous geographical conditions in the Shenzhen West port group. The main function of Mawan Port is to serve as a port area for coastal industrial and urban construction materials in the west of Shenzhen and some water transport materials in the Pearl River Delta region.

Yantian International Container Terminal: Yantian International Container Terminal is an important gateway for China's import and export trade. With its natural deep-water berth conditions and very large vessel service capability, Yantian International has become the port of choice for very large vessels in South China and one of the busiest container terminals in the world.

Yantian Port is a deep-water sand-free port, which is the preferred port for super large ships in South China. In 2020, there were five of the world's largest 200,000-ton container ships berthing in the same port area at the same time, which is the first case in South China and even the country, and is rare in the world. Almost all of the world's super large container ships exceeding 20,000 TEUs have been attached to Yantian Port.

Dachao Bay Pier: the ideal location for the Pearl River Delta cargo distribution. The Tai Chiao Wan Terminal has a significant advantage in handling cargo from major production bases in the pan-Pearl River Delta. Dachao Bay Terminal is located in the central district of Baoan in the west of Shenzhen, adjacent to Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone. The eastern and western port areas are closely divided

Yantian Port is a deep-water sand-free port, which is the preferred port for super large ships in South China. In 2020, five of the world's largest 200,000-ton container ships berthed in the same port area at the same time, which is the first case in South China and even the country, and is rare in the world. Almost all of the world's super large container ships exceeding 20,000 TEUs have called on Yantian Port. On February 1, 2021, Yantian International held the "200 million TEU Celebration and the launch Ceremony of the preferred port of cross-border e-commerce in South China" to celebrate the cumulative container throughput of Yantian Port exceeding 200 million TEU. This is also a new world port record of 200 million TEU in the shortest time for a single port since the first TEU in 1994.

Dachao Bay Port Area is a new world-class container terminal in the western Port area of Shenzhen, with barges covering more than 50 Zhuxi terminals, deep water channels suitable for large vessels and RO-ro vessels, and its 5 special deep water container berths can handle the world's largest container ships and RO-ro vessels. Dachao Bay is also the only maritime vehicle import port in Shenzhen.

On the whole, the total amount of eastern and western port areas is relatively balanced, and it is difficult to distinguish between them.

From the perspective of route distribution trend, the eastern port area is located in the international hub port, mainly based on European and American routes. Of the 96 routes to Yantian Port, 53 are to the Americas and Europe.

The western port area is mainly located in the offshore hub port, which is mainly located in the Asian near-ocean route. Shekou port has 74 Asian routes, Dachao Bay port has only one American route, and the rest are almost all Asian routes.
