The Port of Long Beach's container throughput in August reached a 113-year historical high of 914,000 TEU, an increase of 33.9% from the same period last year and 6,657 TEU higher than the record in May 2021 (907,000 TEU). Among them, import heavy containers surged 40.4% to 457,000 TEU, and export heavy containers increased 12.0% year-on-year to 104,000 TEU. In addition, the number of empty containers passing through the Port of Long Beach increased by 33.7% to 352,000 TEU.

The Port of Long Beach said cargo volumes surged as retailers stocked up ahead of the peak season and labor negotiations continued at U.S. East and U.S. Gulf ports, pushing it to its busiest month in 113 years.

In the first eight months of 2024, the container throughput of the Port of Long Beach reached 6.088 million TEU, a year-on-year increase of 21.9%.

Mario Cordero, CEO of the Port of Long Beach, said, "Flow rerouting and shippers moving cargo ahead of potential tariff increases have created a busy 'peak season' for the Port of Long Beach. Our terminal infrastructure and capacity are adequate to support this year's volume. Ready for growth.”

“As we continue to move cargo quickly, reliably and sustainably, we are seeing record throughput,” said Bonnie Lowenthal, Chairman of the Port of Long Beach Commission. “As the preferred gateway for trans-Pacific shipping routes, the Port of Long Beach is delivering on its promise to provide exceptional service and facilitate cargo The most efficient transportation in the supply chain.”
