The Port of Long Beach experienced its busiest June on record, driven by strong consumer spending, potential tariff increases and ongoing labor contract negotiations at East Coast and Gulf Coast seaports.

 

In June, longshoremen and terminal operators handled 842,446 TEUs, a 41.1% increase from the same period last year and surpassing the previous record of 7,034 TEUs set in June 2022.

 

Among them, imports surged 53% to 419,698 TEUs, exports increased 4% to 98,300 TEUs, and empty containers passing through the port increased 42.1% to 324,448 TEUs.

 

In the first half of 2024, the port's throughput was 4,291,626 TEU, an increase of 15% over the same period last year.

In short, the cargo volume statistics of the Port of Long Beach from June 2019 to June 2024 show that the Port of Long Beach did usher in the busiest June on record this year, with cargo volume reaching 842,000 TEU. This number is even higher than during the epidemic. June 2022, which set the busiest record, was 7,034TEU.

 

At the same time, it is also 13017TEU higher than the peak in 2023 (September).

 

In addition, the Port of Los Angeles also performed strongly in June, with the number of TEUs handled reaching 827,757, an increase of 10% from the previous month. Although it increased slightly by less than 1% from the same period last year, it still demonstrated its vitality.

 

Executive Director Gene Seroka said June was a successful conclusion to the port’s first half of the year.Freight volume and operational efficiency have remained stable.

 

 

He pointed out that the U.S. economy is the main driver of freight growth and predicted that demand will continue to drive demand during the fall and holiday seasons.

 

Overall, the Port of Los Angeles' TEU handling volume in the first six months of 2024 increased by 14% compared with the same period last year, reaching more than 4.73 million, showing a strong recovery trend.
