Fires caused by lithium batteries occur one after another!

Montreal Port Fire, Canada

According to media reports, a fire broke out in a container containing lithium-ion batteries in the Port of Montreal, Canada on September 23, triggering a temporary stay-at-home order for nearby residents.

The incident occurred in one of the ports' containers storing 15,000 kilograms of lithium batteries. A firefighter was injured in the incident.

In fact, this is not the first one in September, similar fire accidents have occurred many times.

Fire in Visakhapatnam, India

On September 14, a fire broke out at the Visakhapatnam Container Terminal in India. Thick smoke enveloped the entire area, and the situation was tense for a time.

Sources said an officer on duty spotted heavy smoke coming from a 40-foot container containing lithium batteries used in electric vehicles, mainly four-wheelers.

After the fire broke out, the terminal management responded quickly and immediately isolated the container, and urgently called in the fire trucks of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority for cooling. Subsequently, the contents of the container were safely removed and properly disposed of in strict accordance with safety procedures.

In addition, the accident occurred near a movie shooting set near the terminal. Fortunately, VCTPL assured that all safety measures were in place and the film crew was not harmed throughout the incident.

The container was said to have arrived in Kolkata from China.

[Visakhapatnam] Visakhapatnam, referred to as Vizag, is a seaport in the middle of the east coast of India. It is located in the middle of the east coast of India, on the west side of the Bay of Bengal. It is the only natural port between Kolkata and Madras. It docks oil tankers with a capacity of 100,000 to 150,000 tons. At the same time, it is also India's largest iron ore export port and the most important port city and economic city in Andhra Pradesh, India. It has the Visakhapatnam Shipbuilding Center, India's largest military shipyard.

Accidents happen frequently this year

Safety accidents caused by lithium batteries have occurred frequently this year.

On August 9, an explosion occurred in Berth 2, Phase 3, of Beilun Second Container Terminal, Ningbo Port, China. After preliminary judgment, relevant departments determined that the explosives included tert-butyl peroxybenzoate and lithium batteries.

In July, a container caught fire at a terminal in Yantian District, Shenzhen. After investigation, the fire scene burned lithium batteries and other goods in the container. The fire area was about 8 square meters. There were no casualties. The cause of the fire was thermal runaway of the lithium battery.

In June, a fire broke out in containers containing goods at Pulau Indah, West Port, Klang, and about 14 containers were burned! A preliminary investigation by the fire department showed that the cause of the fire may be related to lithium batteries.

In view of the particularity of lithium battery cargo, various shipping companies have repeatedly emphasized that if the transported goods contain lithium batteries, the shipper and its agent must perform their declaration duties seriously and truthfully to ensure that the name and hazard level of the declared goods are accurate. Any concealment, false reporting, misreporting or omission.
