The strike continues! A New Deal for Canada's west coast ports failed; MSC Names its Largest container Ship!

Strikes on Canada's west coast have resumed after the longshoremen's union rejected a four-year wage deal reached with employers last week. ILWU Canada, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, said the agreement reached last week with the help of a federal mediator was too long and did not provide enough job security protections. 'We regret to inform you that the Canadian International Steamships Union (ILWU) has informed that ILWU's inner core leadership has rejected the tentative agreement, even before it was put to a vote by the full union membership,' the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) said in a statement on Tuesday. Rob Ashton, president of the International Labour Union's Canada chapter, said a four-year deal was "too long" given the uncertainty in the industry and the broader economy.

At the MSC Gate terminal in Bremerhaven, Germany, MSC held a naming ceremony for its largest container ship, the MSC Michel Cappellini.

On July 19, UPS announced that from now on, UPS will comprehensively simplify the shipping process of shipments containing lithium batteries exported from Shenzhen port. Now, using UPS to ship shipments containing lithium batteries, customers in South China who have been registered by UPS can save additional costs required for third-party testing, accelerate the export speed of shipments, and more easily carry out international business.

The container ship has a container capacity of 24,346 TEUs and is 400 meters long and 61.5 meters wide. The vessel features a small bulbous bow, large diameter propellers and energy efficient piping, which will help further reduce fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions. The MSC Michel Cappellini and its sister ships are also equipped with air lubrication systems to reduce hull drag, as well as shaft generators to generate additional power.

Ahead of the naming ceremony, the Swiss/Italian shipping company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Free and Hanseatic cities of Bremen and Hamburg and their ports, agreeing to use shore power for MSC vessels in both ports.

On July 18, Cainiao and Shandong Port Shipping Group announced the joint opening of the "China-South Korea Daily" e-commerce shipping express line, operating 6 passenger and cargo ships per week (Ferry), with an average of 13 hours to arrive at Pyeongtaek Port, accelerating the realization of China-South Korea international express delivery "three days" of the entire coverage of South Korea.

UPS plans to further reduce its affiliate business with top customer Amazon in 2023, and Amazon has similar considerations. Amazon is gradually building its own logistics empire to better control shipping times and improve customer delivery experiences, while UPS wants to seek orders beyond e-commerce logistics to improve margins. Data from research firm MWPVL International shows that the two companies are working less together - UPS will handle 1.3 billion Amazon packages in 2022, down from 1.41 billion in 2021. Marc Wulfraat, founder of MWPVL, said: "We have seen a slight drop in the absolute number of packages. Before that, the number had been growing due to the growing total number of packages. Now Amazon's reach is so wide that they can handle their own shipments."
