According to foreign media reports, in order to promote maritime trade, Thailand’s Ministry of Transport is preparing to establish a national shipping company.
The deputy transport minister said she had ordered the Ports of Thailand Authority to conduct a feasibility study for cabinet consideration. Meanwhile, the Port Authority of Thailand has submitted the study results to the Ministry of Transport, which will decide whether the shipping company will operate as a state-owned enterprise or a public-private partnership, the director said.
The cabinet will also consider whether the project should be promoted by the Thailand Investment Commission, he said. explained that Thai National Shipping Line ultimately hopes to have both domestic and international shipping routes, but will focus on eight domestic routes.
Sources say the Tourism Authority of Thailand is leaning toward having the company operate under a public-private partnership model to allow for fast and flexible management. Initially, the shipping line will contribute approximately 2% of Thailand's import and export trade, or approximately 31,005 20-foot standard containers.
Sources said the national shipping line aims to start with operating four container ships. It is reported that this is Thailand’s third attempt to establish a state-owned shipping company.
