Evergreen Line's decision to charge customers for carbon dioxide allowances from January 1 next year appears to be the first container line to clarify how much customers will have to pay under the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), which is due to start in 2024. company.

Currently, only container shipping companies such as Maersk and CMA CGM have provided relevant information. Taking the Far East-Northern Europe route as an example, the surcharge per TEU is approximately US-30.

According to Alphaliner, once the EU ETS comes into effect on January 1, 2024, Evergreen, for example, will charge 27 euros per container from Asia to Europe.

That's not far off from the 25 euros per container French shipping company CMA CGM has announced it will charge customers for the same distance. CMA CGM previously stated that the final charging standards will be announced in mid-November.

In the transportation of general cargo ships, the loading and unloading technology of containers is quite different from that of container transport ships, and the scale effect is far less than that of dedicated container transport ships. Containers can only be regarded as a special general cargo. Therefore, there is a big difference between the ETS surcharge and that of the container shipping company.

According to current market information, the vast majority of container shipping companies will choose to transfer the cost of EU emission allowances (EUA) to the lower reaches of the supply chain in the form of EU ETS surcharges.

But as Alphaliner points out, there appears to be significant variation in how shipping lines price their ETS charges, which may also be a competitive parameter.

It is expected that the shipping market will usher in price turbulence in the near future. Pay attention to the cross-port logistics platform to help you grasp the freight rates trends of each shipping company and route in a timely manner, and be at the forefront of industry trends.
