Recently, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) announced that it will further strengthen its southern African route network by optimizing existing routes and adding two short-term shuttle services to promote trade connections between the region and Europe and other global markets.
Route updates and new services
NWC services to South Africa
Providing direct connections between Northern Europe, South Africa and Namibia, with a new direct connection to Walvis Bay in Namibia.
Walvis Bay will serve as a transit hub for services from New North West Europe (NWC) to South Africa, making the movement of goods from Europe more efficient.
Namibia Express
Connecting Cape Town, South Africa and Walvis Bay, Namibia, providing a solution for European cargo to be transited to Namibia through Cape Town.
First voyage information: MSC Himanshi III will depart Cape Town on January 8, 2025 and is expected to arrive in Walvis Bay on January 11.
Port rotation: Cape Town (South Africa) – Walvis Bay (Namibia) – Cape Town (South Africa).
Mozambique Shuttle
Connecting Walvis Bay (Namibia), Maputo and Beira (Mozambique), and extending to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and Mombasa (Kenya).
First voyage information: MSC Imma III will depart from Beira on January 14, 2025 and is expected to arrive in Walvis Bay on January 24.
Port rotation: Beira (Mozambique) – Walvis Bay (Namibia) – Durban (South Africa) – Maputo (Mozambique) – Mombasa (Kenya) – Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) – Beira ( Mozambique).
The newly revised NWC service to South Africa will make its maiden voyage on January 20, 2025, from the gateway port of London, UK, by MSC Rosaria.
Port rotation is as follows:
London Gateway (UK) – Bremerhaven (Germany) – Rotterdam (Netherlands) – Antwerp (Belgium) – Le Havre (France) – Sinish (Portugal) – Las Palmas (Spain) – Walvis Bay (Namibia) – Gekboha (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) – Durban (South Africa) – Cape Town (South Africa) – Las Palmas (Spain) – London Gateway (UK).
With Walvis Bay designated as MSC’s new transit hub on the west coast of southern Africa, European cargo can achieve smoother logistics transportation through NWC services to South Africa. At the same time, the newly added Namibia Express and Mozambique shuttle services will further enhance MSC's internal network coverage in Africa and provide more efficient logistics solutions for connecting Northern Europe, South Africa, East Africa and other regions.
