Recently, Hong Kong Customs of China issued a press release stating that,From September 25 to October 4, four cigarette smuggling cases were detected at the Tuen Mun River Pier.A total of about 7.4 million suspected illicit cigarettes were seized, with an estimated market value of about million and a taxable value of about million.
Hong Kong Customs stated that through risk assessment and intelligence analysis, the CustomsOn September 25, a 40-foot shipping container arriving from Nansha and declared to contain ceramic tiles was selected and inspected at the Customs House Inspection Facility at Tuen Mun River Terminal.After inspection, customs officers seized approximately 2.4 million suspected illicit cigarettes in the container, and a 68-year-old man suspected of being involved was arrested.
After follow-up investigations by the Customs, three similar cases were detected at the Cargo Inspection Area of the Customs House at Tuen Mun River Pier.Customs officers inspected three 40-foot containers that also arrived in Hong Kong from Nansha on October 2, 3 and 4. The three containers were respectively reported to contain food, cardboard boxes and chandeliers.A total of about 5 million suspected illicit cigarettes were seized. Three men aged 67 to 68 were arrested on suspicion of involvement.
It is reported that the above four cases are still under investigation.
Hong Kong Customs reminds that it will continue to strengthen its crackdown on cross-border illicit cigarette activities based on risk assessment and intelligence analysis. Smuggling is a serious crime. According to the Import and Export Ordinance, any person who imports or exports unmanifested goods may be fined up to million and imprisoned for seven years upon conviction.
According to the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance, any person who handles, possesses, sells or purchases illicit cigarettes commits an offense and is liable upon conviction to a maximum fine of million and imprisonment for two years.
In response to this series of smuggling cases, the Tuen Mun River Terminal Customs stated that it will continue to maintain a high-pressure posture and severely crack down on smuggling criminal activities. Specific measures include:
Strengthen intelligence collection and analysis:Use big data, artificial intelligence and other modern technological means to improve intelligence collection and analysis capabilities and accurately combat smuggling crimes.
Strengthen risk assessment and inspection:Implement key inspections on high-risk containers to improve inspection efficiency and accuracy. At the same time, daily supervision and inspections of imported and exported goods will be strengthened.
