In international trade, the export of wood products, especially wood packaging materials, often requires a process called "fumigation".

What is fumigation?

Fumigation is a method of treating items with chemicals or heat in order to destroy or control pests, pathogens, weed seeds and other harmful organisms. In international trade, fumigation is often used for wood and wood products to prevent cross-border spread of pests and protect the forest resources and ecological environment of various countries.

Fumigation is usually carried out in a sealed container to ensure that the chemicals or heat can penetrate evenly into every corner of the item. After processing, items need to meet certain safety standards to ensure they do not cause harm to the environment or human health during transportation.

Why do wood products need to be fumigated for export?

The main reason why wood products need to be fumigated for export is to meet the regulations of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and the phytosanitary requirements of the importing country. These regulations and requirements are intended to prevent the spread of pests and pathogens through international trade, thus protecting the forest resources and ecological balance of each country. The main reasons include:

Prevent the spread of pests:Untreated wood products may carry pests such as beetles and termites, which may survive and reproduce in the new environment, posing a threat to local forest resources.

Comply with international regulations:The IPPC has developed the international standard ISPM 15 (International Plant Protection Convention Standard No. 15), which specifies international handling and labeling requirements for wood packaging materials. Most countries require imported wood products to comply with ISPM 15 standards.

Protect the country’s ecology:In order to protect their own forest resources and ecological security, governments of various countries usually require imported wood products to be fumigated and accompanied by corresponding certification documents.

Should solid wood furniture be fumigated for export?

As a type of wood product, solid wood furniture also needs to comply with the phytosanitary regulations of the exporting and importing countries. If the exported solid wood furniture contains untreated wood, or the source of the wood is recognized as a pest-infested area by the importing country, then the solid wood furniture usually needs to be fumigated before export.

Fumigation treatment can ensure that pests in solid wood furniture are completely eliminated and reduce the risk of spread. In addition, after completing the fumigation process, solid wood furniture exporters usually need to obtain an official fumigation certificate to prove that the batch of goods has been processed in accordance with the prescribed procedures and meets the quarantine requirements of the importing country.

Specific operations of fumigation treatment

Fumigation is a technical measure to disinfect goods and their packaging. Compounds such as fumigants are usually used to kill pests, germs or other harmful organisms in a closed place. The fumigation process needs to be carried out at least two days in advance to ensure a 24-hour fumigation cycle and a 4-hour poison dispersion process to avoid damage to the goods. Fumigated wooden packaging should be shipped as soon as possible and stored separately, away from untreated wood products.

After the fumigation treatment is completed, the wooden packaging is usually stamped with the IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) logo, which is an internationally recognized label for exported wooden packaging, proving that the packaging has undergone fumigation or heat treatment, effectively blocking the transnational transmission chain of harmful organisms. The label usually includes IPPC symbols, country codes (such as CN for China), treatment method codes (such as MB for methyl bromide fumigation, HT for heat treatment) and other information.

Wood products that do not require fumigation treatment

It’s important to note that not all wood products require fumigation. For example, wooden boxes, wooden pallets, etc., all made of artificial boards such as plywood, particleboard, fiberboard, etc., or thin wood products with a thickness less than 6 mm, or specially treated wooden packaging (such as wine barrels, wooden gift boxes, etc.), usually do not need to be fumigated. However, these regulations may vary depending on the specific requirements of the importing country, so export companies should learn about the quarantine regulations for wood packaging in the importing and exporting countries through multiple channels.

Fumigation is an indispensable part of the export process of wood products, which ensures the safe circulation of wood products in international trade. At the same time, this is also an important measure to meet the import quarantine requirements of various countries and ensure the smooth progress of trade. Therefore, export enterprises should strictly abide by international quarantine standards and carefully select reputable freight forwarding companies to export goods to avoid losses due to improper agency operations.
