ONE has updated the situation of the container ship "Madrid Bridge" (13,900 TEU), which was involved in a container collapse last week (7 January), with approximately 60 containers now estimated to have fallen overboard and a further 80 containers damaged. At the time of the incident, the container ship "Madrid Bridge" was serving on the East Coast4 (EC4) service, voyage 016E/W, en route to New York, USA. Previous ports of call included the ports of Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Yantian and Gayme and Singapore, with scheduled calls at the ports of New York, Norfolk, Savannah and Charleston. (Previously: Container collapse on a large container ship) ONE issued an announcement yesterday stating that based on preliminary investigations, it is estimated that approximately 60 containers fell overboard and a further 80 containers were damaged. These figures may be updated upon further investigation. The vessel is currently en route to the East Coast of the United States and, if all goes well, will dock at the Port of Charleston to conduct a detailed assessment of the vessel's condition and unload the affected containers. ONE said it will keep you updated on progress and the vessel's schedule as more information becomes available. The ship's owner, Kawasak iKisen Kaisha Ltd (KLine), said that there were no injuries and no containers with dangerous cargo were lost. Furthermore, ONE did not disclose the exact cause of the accident on the vessel. According to ONE's announcement the ship did not call at the Port of New York as scheduled but went directly to the Port of Charleston. Over the weekend, the ports of New York and New Jersey reported delays in the arrival of container ships at the terminals due to excessive cargo volumes and the unavailability of dock workers due to the new crown virus and year-end holidays, with approximately a dozen container ships waiting to dock near the Port of New York. However, Charleston is also experiencing a backlog of ships, although port officials say they are working to reduce the number of ships waiting to berth. ais data shows that there are currently around eight ships anchored in the anchorage near the Port of Charleston. Cargo owners and forwarders who are assigned to this container vessel are reminded to keep in communication with the shipping company to keep abreast of the latest situation of the vessel and cargo, delays in sailing schedules etc.
