China to Bulgaria Door to Door Shipping Service Aegean Route
The Short Answer
Bulgaria sits behind a strait. Every container bound for Varna or Burgas passes the Turkish Straits first, and how long that passage takes has more to do with the calendar than with the distance from Shanghai. The alternative is not shorter on paper: cargo lands at Piraeus or Thessaloniki in Greece and finishes the journey by road, roughly 300 kilometres from Thessaloniki to Sofia. Which of the two gates a consignment uses is the largest single variable in a Bulgarian door-to-door quote, and it is settled at booking, not at the quay.
What a Booking Covers
One contract carries the goods from your supplier to a Bulgarian address: collection, the export declaration, the sea leg to either the Black Sea or the Aegean, the import entry lodged in the Customs Agency's electronic system, duty and 20 per cent VAT, and delivery.
Written as DDP, the entry is ours and the VAT is settled by us, so the consignee receives cleared cargo against a single invoice in euro.
Written as DDU, the consignee lodges the entry in its own name and pays at release, and where the goods landed in Greece it also inherits the road leg across the border.
Where the Two Terms Split the File
Read the two offers against three documents and the difference stops being abstract.
The entry
On DDP the declaration carries our name as importer and the consignee never appears on it. On DDU it carries the consignee's name, and the first thing a Bulgarian buyer discovers is that its own registration has to be in place before the vessel berths.
The payment at release
Under DDP the duty and the 20 per cent are funded by us at the moment of release and recovered afterwards through the return. Under DDU that cash leaves the consignee's account on the day, which hurts most when a container arrives ahead of the forecast and the funds were not scheduled.
The recovery
Whoever stands as importer is the party entitled to deduct the import VAT. On DDP that right is ours and is already inside the rate; on DDU it belongs to the consignee, and a buyer without taxable activity in Bulgaria absorbs the tax as pure cost.
Two Coasts, One Chokepoint
The Black Sea gate
Varna is the country's main container port, with Burgas taking bulk and project cargo further down the coast. Both sit inside the Black Sea, so every box transits the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles under the Montreux regime, and Turkey controls the scheduling. Allow 30 to 42 days door to door, with the spread driven by strait queueing and, since 2022, by war-risk premiums that underwriters reprice rather than remove.
The Aegean gate
Piraeus and Thessaloniki stand outside the strait altogether. A container discharged at Thessaloniki is about 300 kilometres from Sofia by motorway, and the crossing at Kulata has been a formality since Bulgaria became a full Schengen member on 1 January 2025. Door to door settles at 28 to 36 days, and the variance is narrower because nothing in the chain waits on a strait.
What the strait actually costs
Two numbers decide it. The first is the queue, which runs in days and cannot be booked around. The second is the premium, charged per transit and capable of moving within a single sailing cycle. A Black Sea quotation that looks cheaper on the ocean freight is rarely cheaper once those two lines are added, which is why both corridors are priced here against the same delivery date.
What Bulgarian Rules Ask of the Pack
Registration comes before the first delivery
Anyone placing packaged goods on the Bulgarian market registers with the Executive Environment Agency before the activity begins, applying within the month that precedes it, and states whether the obligation will be met individually or through a collective scheme. Registration is a precondition rather than a follow-up: a first delivery made ahead of it is a breach with nothing left to rectify.
The material code stays mandatory
Bulgarian rules made the recycling pictograms voluntary while keeping the material identification code compulsory, so the arrows may be dropped and the letters and number may not. Marketers of single-use plastic products carry a further duty to organise separate collection for them, which is a producer obligation sitting outside the freight file.
Prices are in euro now
Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026 at the irrevocable rate of 1.95583 lev per euro, becoming the twenty-first member of the currency area. Quotations and invoices are issued in euro, VAT stands at 20 per cent on the standard rate with 9 per cent for a short list, and a legacy contract still written in lev converts at that fixed rate rather than at a negotiated one.
Why Shippers Route Bulgarian Cargo Through Us
A Bulgarian consignment punishes one bad assumption harder than a slow vessel does. A corridor chosen on ocean freight and then held at the strait loses the delivery date; a corridor chosen for speed without a road plan loses the margin. Sunny Worldwide Logistics (SZ) Limited prices both gates against the date the cargo is needed, books the one that meets it, and carries the inland leg from the Aegean quay inside the same contract instead of bolting it on later.
The container is collected by our own fleet at the Shenzhen terminal for the same reason: a first mile that slips by two days is enough to miss a sailing and stretch a 30-day corridor into a 44-day one.

The Company Behind the Entry
Sunny Worldwide Logistics (SZ) Limited has forwarded cargo out of Shenzhen since 1998, working as a domestic and international forwarder that owns its transport capacity instead of brokering it. A 1,800 square metre Class A office in Shenzhen and a trucking company at the sea port keep collection, terminal handling and the customs file inside one organisation.

Questions Importers Ask About Bulgarian DDP
Q: Does every Black Sea shipment pass through the Bosphorus?
A: Yes. The Black Sea has no other outlet to the open sea, so Varna, Burgas and the Romanian ports all depend on the Turkish Straits, and transit there is administered by Turkey under the Montreux Convention rather than by the carrier.
Q: Is the Aegean corridor more expensive?
A: Not reliably. For Sofia and the west the road leg from Thessaloniki is short enough that the total often matches a Black Sea routing, and it removes the queue risk. For the eastern coast around Varna, the Black Sea gate still wins on distance.
Q: Which VAT rate applies to our goods?
A: 20 per cent on the standard rate. The 9 per cent band covers a short list such as books, baby food and hygiene products, and most imported industrial or consumer lines do not qualify.
Q: Can invoices still be issued in lev?
A: No. The lev was replaced by the euro on 1 January 2026 at 1.95583, and Bulgarian invoices are issued in euro. An older contract that still quotes lev is converted at that fixed rate, so the figure is arithmetic rather than a matter for negotiation.
Q: Do we need to register with the Executive Environment Agency?
A: If you place packaged goods on the Bulgarian market, yes, and the application has to go in during the month before the activity starts. The registration also records whether recovery is handled individually or through a collective scheme.
Q: Does DDP include the road leg from Greece?
A: It does. Under DDP the border crossing and the trucking from the Aegean port sit inside our price. Under DDU the consignee takes the goods at the Greek port and arranges both, which is where a first-time importer usually loses a week.
Get a DDP or DDU Figure for Bulgaria
Send the commodity, the carton count, the delivery city and the date the goods are needed. The date is the part that matters: it tells us whether the Black Sea corridor still has slack or whether the Aegean road is the only way to hit it.
Two figures come back on the same consignment, one with duty and VAT inside the price and one stopping at delivery.
