The strike, jointly organized by the country's two major trade union federations, CGTP and UGT, will be Portugal's first nationwide general strike in 12 years to protest against the government's proposed changes to labor laws.

At the same time, some unions also called on their members to stage targeted strikes on Friday, known as "Operation Day Two Paralysis".

Analysts say that the strike is expected to involve about half of Portugal's workforce, which may cause serious chaos across the country and cause widespread delays or disruptions to transportation.
