This week, many European ports will experience a wave of strikes.
It is reported that on December 12, Italy will usher in a nationwide general strike. It is expected that the four major ports and railway systems in Genoa and Trieste will interrupt operations for 24 hours.
Portugal will also usher in its first nationwide general strike in 12 years on December 11.
December 12 (Friday), Italy will hold a nationwide general strike, organized by the country's largest union CGIL, to protest budget issues.
The strike will last all day, when the four major ports and railway systems in Genoa and Trieste will suspend operations for 24 hours.
Freight shipments may face delays during strike action. Logistics companies have been informed of possible delivery delays and limited vehicle availability.
In addition, other strikes are planned in Italy in December, affecting sea, land, and air transportation and logistics.
Here is a list of planned strikes reported in local media:
-
December 9 (Tuesday) – Rome public transport
-
December 9 (Tuesday) to December 11 (Thursday) – National Ferry Strike
-
December 12 (Friday) – National General Strike
-
December 17 (Wednesday) – National Aviation Operation
-
December 22 (Monday) to December 24 (Wednesday) - National Freight Logistics
Analysts say that the strike is expected to involve about half of Portugal's workforce, which may cause serious chaos across the country and cause widespread delays or disruptions to transportation.
