The Port of Los Angeles has set a historical record for container throughput in a single month, handling more than 1 million TEUs in May, an increase of 74% compared to the same period last year.
The throughput of the Port of Los Angeles last month was 1,012,048 TEUs. This was the busiest month in the port's 114-year history, and the 10th consecutive month of year-on-year growth. It was also the first time that a port in the Western Hemisphere handled more than 1 million TEUs a month.
Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, said: "Our cargo management has reached a historical level, which reflects that we have further increased productivity, throughput and speed through cooperation with our partners to reach new heights."
At the same time, the Port of Los Angeles set another Western Hemisphere record last week, shipping more than 10 million TEUs in the 12 months ending June 30.

Among them, the loading and export volume of the Port of Los Angeles in May increased by 5.3% year-on-year to 109,886TEU, and the empty container volume climbed to 366,448TEU, an increase of 114% year-on-year, mainly due to the huge demand in Asia. This is the largest number of empty containers handled by a major port in California in a month.
The monthly import volume in May also hit a record high. Loading imports increased by 75% year-on-year, totaling 535,714 TEUs, surpassing the August 2020 record of 516,286 TEUs.
"But our trade gap has now widened to 4.9 to 1. This is the largest import and export gap seen in our time," Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, said in a statement.
The Port of Long Beach and South Carolina Port Authority also reported a record May last week. The Georgia Port Authority announced that it has achieved growth for 10 consecutive months, making it the second busiest month in history.
