It is reported that due to severe weather and sea conditions, more than 100 containers on board the Zim Kingston container ship fell into the water and burst into flames. Recently, the second fire broke out when it was unloading at the port of Nanaimo near Vancouver. The ship had previously declared general average.

According to local CHEK news reports, at around 13:00 on Tuesday, December 21st, a fire broke out when the container ship Zim Kingston was docked at the Duke Point Bulk Cargo Terminal at the port. The Zim Kingston was carrying out container salvage and unloading operations at the port.

The Nanaimo Port Authority stated that the fire was caused by the insulating material of a damaged container. Photos from the scene showed that heavy smoke was emitted from the stack of containers near the stern, which was far from the location of the first fire on the ship.

Port Authority Chairman Ian Marr stated that it is believed that sparks from high-temperature operations entered the damaged container and caused the fire. Rescuers and first responders spent about 90 minutes extinguishing the fire, but the fire did not spread. The cause of the accident is under investigation, no one was injured and the loss was not immediately estimated.

According to the port, 42 of the 58 damaged containers on the ship have been unloaded from the ship. The process of unloading the damaged cargo from the container ship is under very strict control. Safety assessments are carried out on each lift, and rescuers only conduct daily 8-10 lift operations. Once the work is completed, Zim Kingston will move to another port to complete the unloading of the undamaged part of the cargo.

Prior to this, the Zim Kingston container ship also had a fire accident. On October 22, the container ship Zim Kingston encountered a storm on its way to the Port of Vancouver. More than 100 containers on board fell into the sea. On the second day after the container fell into the sea, the container on the ship caught fire.

At the time, the Canadian Coast Guard stated that 10 containers were on fire, two of which contained potassium amylxanthate, a dangerous substance used in mining.

In addition, the "Zim Kingston" container ship was fully loaded with container cargo before the accident. The ports of call include my country's Kaohsiung Port, Xiamen Port, Yantian Port, Ningbo Port and Shanghai Port. The salvage work of the ship's cargo is in progress.

Please pay attention to the latest situation if there is a freight forwarding company that carries the ship.
