Just as Canada's two largest ports have just ended their strikes and are gradually resuming operations, the country's postal workers have launched another "national strike"! The Canadian postal system is paralyzed and millions of packages are facing severe delays!
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) issued an early warning that approximately 55,000 postal workers will start a three-day strike starting in the early morning of the 15th Eastern Time (Saturday afternoon, the 16th Beijing time), demanding higher wages and improved working conditions. As a result, Canada Post's operations have been completely suspended.
The Canadian Postal Workers Union says that despite a year of negotiations, no progress has been made between labor and management. This triggered the largest strike in the past six years.
According to foreign media sources, the business shutdown caused by this strike will affect millions of Canadians and businesses across the country.
It is reported that unlike the previous Rotation Strike (rotating strikes in various departments), this time Canada Post will face a Full Strike (a comprehensive simultaneous strike in all departments). Therefore, this strike will lead to the complete paralysis of Canada Post. All in-transit, arrival and Packages on the way to delivery will face the risk of being stagnated on the spot.
Canada Post issued an announcement stating that postal customers will experience delays. Affected by the strike, mail and parcels will not be processed or delivered, and some postal outlets will be closed. The service guarantees enjoyed by items that have entered the postal network will also be affected. Canada Post will not be accepting new mail items until the strike is over.
It is expected that millions of packages will be affected by the strike. Relevant cross-border e-commerce sellers and logistics companies need to pay special attention to the impact of this strike, pay attention to logistics risks, and adjust relevant transportation plans in a timely manner.
It is reported that the Canada Post strike is more serious than previously expected by the industry. Some leading companies in the field, represented by JiaPost International, have developed diversified terminal delivery solutions based on the experience of the last general strike in 2018. Plans, such as the "UniUni delivery express delivery" model, have minimized the impact of the Canada Post strike.
Canadian Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon said a special mediator has been appointed to coordinate labor negotiations between the two parties.
In addition, after a two-week strike, the Port of Montreal resumed operations at 7 a.m. local time on November 16.
The Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has ordered the port to reopen. The Montreal Port Authority said it is working with the port and intermodal partners to implement recovery plans.
While the plan is to quickly resume normal operations, clearing the backlog could take weeks. German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd also said the cleanup process could last several weeks, which would cause delays in customs clearance and deliveries.
Therefore, shipping companies' sailing schedules need to be readjusted to cope with major delays.
Meanwhile, the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) said it will comply with the CIRB order and assign tasks to port employees on November 15. MEA will work with the Longshoremen’s Union (CUPE Local 375) and other supply chain partners to ensure an efficient resumption of operations.
