Something happened again! According to foreign media reports, the British-flagged bulk carrier "Anglo Marie Louise" exploded off the coast of the United States recently.
Maritime claims consultancy WK Webster said it received reports on Wednesday that a cargo hold explosion occurred on the 115,000-dwt mini-capesize ship Anglo Marie Louise (built in 2011) of British shipowner Anglo International Shipping near the US east coast city of Norfolk..
Fortunately, no crew members were injured and the vessel remains seaworthy despite the damage. After the explosion, the Anglo Marie Louise continued its journey and anchored off Virginia Beach, near the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay.
AIS showed that as of 19:21 on December 1, the ship was still "anchored".
This is not the first time the Anglo Marie Louise has run into trouble. As early as March 2024, the ship experienced a power failure while sailing on the Mississippi River near New Orleans. This caused the ship to lose control, but two tugboats managed to steer it and avoid a collision with a docked vessel.
The U.S. Coast Guard is currently investigating the incident.
Freighter explosions are not uncommon, and there have been several in the second half of this year alone, such as:
On July 19, 2024, a 5,500-TEU container ship "Maersk Frankfurt" owned by Maersk exploded and subsequently burst into flames.
On August 9, 2024, an explosion occurred on a container ship at the container terminal in the Beilun Port area of Ningbo Zhoushan Port.
On August 11, 2024, while MSC's container ship "MSC CAPETOWN III" was berthing at the JCT Terminal in the Port of Colombo, an explosion occurred under the deck of the cargo ship, followed by a fire.
On October 13, 2024, two liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers suffered an explosion and fire while conducting a ship-to-ship cargo transfer outside Chittagong Port in Bangladeshi waters.
On November 28, 2024, the Swedish general cargo ship SOFIA and another container ship JML ABADI suffered an explosion on its starboard main deck on the same day.
These accidents further highlight the urgency of strengthening port safety management and supervision of dangerous goods transportation.
We would like to warmly remind all relevant parties that it is necessary to strengthen the management of flammable, explosive and dangerous goods, strengthen safety awareness and shipboard operating regulations, and ensure transportation safety.
