According to Seatrade Maritime, Dubai-based Emirates Shipping Line (ESL) has decided to stop accepting plastic waste cargoes. The relevant measures will take effect from October 1, 2026, saying that this is a decision made by the company after evaluating this type of cargo.
This adjustment targets plastic waste (plastic waste), not all plastic products.
Seatrade Maritime reports mentioned that related goods correspond to HS Code 3915 . Therefore, a distinction needs to be made: ordinary plastic products ≠ plastic waste.
Starting from October 1st, if plastic waste cargo is involved, you need to reconfirm ESL's shipping policy before booking, and you cannot simply follow the operation of ordinary plastic cargo.
ESL said the move was related to its long-term direction of protecting marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
This is not the first time container shipping companies have taken similar measures. In 2022, CMA CGM announced that it would stop transporting plastic waste, effective from June 1, 2022; at the same time, CMA CGM set restrictions on the relevant HS 3915 in the booking system, and clearly reminded that false declarations of the nature of the goods may cause relevant companies to be blacklisted.
According to reports, ESL is the second container shipping company to publicly announce this measure after CMA CGM.
For bookings involving waste plastics, plastic scraps and other goods, special confirmation of the shipping policy is required after October 1.
Pay special attention to two points:

The first is to confirm the HS Code and the attributes of the actual goods. Plastic products cannot be confused with plastic waste just because they are both "plastic";

Second, do not circumvent shipping restrictions by modifying cargo information. CMA CGM has previously made it clear that false declarations of the nature of goods may result in relevant companies being blacklisted.
Whether more shipping companies will take similar measures in the future depends on the official announcements of each shipping company.
