U.S. Shipping News: U.S. Government Launches Supply Chain Information Sharing Program to Optimize Ports and Transoceanic Shipping

The Biden administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation announced the launch of a major supply chain initiative, the Freight Logistics Optimization Project (FLOW), designed to help speed up delivery times and reduce costs for consumers.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, FLOW is an information-sharing program designed to pilot the exchange of critical freight information between parts of the freight transportation supply chain.

"This supply chain data-sharing effort will support system resiliency, improve our trade competitiveness, and enable U.S. businesses to bring products to market with greater consistency and lower cost," commented Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles Road, the port is one of the initiative's 18 initial participants.

FLOW includes 18 participants representing diverse perspectives across the supply chain, including private companies, trucking, warehousing, logistics companies, ports, and more.

The Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), MSC and the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) are initial participants in the initiative.

André Simha, Chief Digital and Information Officer at MSC, said: "We strongly believe that a common and interoperable digital infrastructure is a critical step in improving supply chain efficiency, security and resilience across the container shipping industry, adding," There is no doubt that this move will strengthen the foundation for the seamless, end-to-end exchange of information we all need to keep global trade flowing today and tomorrow. "

The U.S. government hopes and expects more transportation and logistics stakeholders to participate in the initiative in the future.

The partners will work with the Biden administration to develop information exchanges to ease supply chain congestion, speed up the movement of goods and ultimately reduce costs for consumers.

Mario Cordero, executive director of the Port of Long Beach, noted, "Developing common data standards to facilitate freight is an important part of truly bringing our industry into the 21st century."

Griff Lynch, Executive Director of GPA, said: “More transparency – knowing where a vessel or container is at each stage of transport – will provide shippers and logistics providers with the predictability they need to optimise the use of resources. Through better communication , every aspect of the supply chain, such as production time, staffing, trucks and chassis, and warehouse space, can be fine-tuned to improve efficiency and speed.”

In a similar direction, DCSA CEO Thomas Bagge believes that "having an interoperable digital infrastructure will help eliminate blind spots by increasing the availability and reliability of data."
