China to Austria Door to Door Air Sea Shipping Service
The Short Answer
Austria is landlocked, but distance is not what sets its transit times. The limit is a timetable. Lorries above 7.5 tonnes and lorries with trailers may not move between 22:00 and 05:00 on any night, nor from Saturday 15:00 until Sunday 22:00, and on the Brenner and Inntal corridors the Saturday restriction starts in the morning during the winter and summer windows. A container that clears on Friday afternoon therefore reaches its ramp on Monday, whatever the sailing did. Understanding that saves more days here than a faster vessel does.
What a Booking Covers
The service is one contract from your supplier's door to the Austrian address: collection, export declaration, the main leg by rail, sea or air, the import entry, and the delivery to the ramp.
DDP means the entry is lodged in our name, with duty, the 20 per cent import VAT and the packaging obligations inside the price. DDU means the consignee is importer, pays at release and deducts on its own return, while we keep the freight and the delivery.
The Week the Truck Actually Has
Take the bans together and a long-haul lorry has four and a half usable days. Sunday evening is a restart, Friday afternoon is a cliff, and every night loses seven hours that no schedule recovers. A Monday arrival in Vienna has a full week ahead of it; a Friday arrival has an afternoon.
Planners therefore work backwards from the ramp rather than forwards from the port. If the receiver cannot unload on Monday morning, the sensible booking is the vessel a week later, not the one that lands on Friday and pays terminal storage for the weekend.
The Alpine corridors add a second layer. On the A12 through the Inn valley and the A13 over the Brenner, Austria restricts heavy vehicles with foreign destinations on Saturdays from 07:00 to 15:00 in the January to early March window, and again through the summer on the Inntal route. Those bans are contested by neighbouring states and revised most years, so a rate built on last season's calendar is a rate built on the wrong calendar.
Who Pays for the Waiting
Waiting is cheap to describe and expensive to allocate, and that is where the two terms part company. Four situations recur.
A container grounded over the weekend. Terminal storage and demurrage accrue to whoever holds the contract with the terminal. On DDP that is us, priced in advance; on DDU the consignee collects the invoice and discovers the cost after the fact.
A driver held at the dock. Every hour past the free time is charged by the haulier. On DDP the exposure is ours and sits inside the rate; on DDU the consignee signs the waiting note and pays it directly.
A missed slot. Austrian warehouses book narrow windows. A truck turned away at four in the afternoon returns on Monday, and the second attempt is a new cost. DDP absorbs it; DDU passes it on.
A receiver with no crew. The most common cause and the least discussed. Under DDU the consignee owns the consequence; under DDP we still invoice it once, clearly, rather than hiding it in the freight rate.
Which Route Fits Which Address
If the address is Vienna, Lower Austria or Burgenland, the train usually wins. Block trains from China terminate at the Vienna and Wels terminals, and rail is the one mode the weekend ban does not touch. Budget 18 to 24 days to the ramp.
If the address is Tyrol, Vorarlberg or Salzburg, the Adriatic is closer than the Baltic. A Koper or Trieste discharge followed by an overnight Alpine run avoids the long northern haul. Plan on 30 to 38 days.
If the address is Upper Austria or Styria and the cargo is heavy, the northern ports compete on price. Hamburg and Bremerhaven reach Linz, Enns and Graz by rail or road, at 32 to 42 days, and the saving is real for dense freight that can wait.
If the goods are dated, Vienna airport is workable but thin. Most air cargo connects through a larger hub and finishes on a truck, so the air band here runs 5 to 8 days rather than a flight time.
What the Deposit Does to an Invoice
Austria added a 25 cent deposit on single-use beverage containers in January 2025, covering PET bottles and aluminium cans from 0.1 to 3 litres. It behaves differently from a tax, which is why it deserves a line of its own: the deposit is not part of the VAT base, it is refunded when the container comes back, and the collection target rises to 90 per cent by 2027.
For a door-to-door quotation the practical consequence is narrow and easy to get wrong. Where a consignment contains deposit-bearing drinks, the deposit must sit outside the customs value and outside the 20 per cent VAT calculation. A rate that applies VAT to it over-recovers the tax and will not survive an audit.
VAT itself is 20 per cent standard, 10 per cent for food, books, medicines, restaurants and accommodation, 13 per cent for a shorter list that includes wood, plants, cultural services and domestic flights. Since 1 July 2026 a 4.9 per cent rate applies to staple foods including dairy, eggs, vegetables and fruit, which matters for mixed pallets where the invoice breaks the lines out.
Why Shippers Route Austrian Cargo Through Us
Collection is ours, not subcontracted. Sunny Worldwide Logistics (SZ) Limited runs a trucking company at the Shenzhen sea port, so the container movement from your factory to the terminal is scheduled by the desk that books the train or the vessel and prepares the Austrian entry.
The calendar is the reason that matters. Austrian delivery dates are set by when a truck is allowed to move rather than by how fast it can drive, so the slot is confirmed before the rate is issued, and the standing cost that follows a Friday arrival is quoted as a known figure instead of arriving as a surprise invoice three weeks later.

Questions Importers Ask About Austrian DDP
Q: Can a delivery be made on Saturday?
A: Only before 15:00, and only outside the seasonal restrictions on the Brenner and Inntal corridors. After that the ban runs until Sunday 22:00, so a Saturday afternoon arrival means the truck stands for a day and a half.
Q: Why is the quoted transit longer than the sailing?
A: Because the sailing is not the constraint. Night bans remove seven hours from every day and the weekend removes a further day and a half. A quote that only adds port time will miss the ramp date whenever the vessel berths late in the week.
Q: Does the 25 cent deposit affect the duty or the VAT?
A: Neither. The deposit sits outside the customs value and outside the VAT base, and it is returned when the container comes back. It has to be shown separately on the invoice rather than folded into the goods price.
Q: Which VAT rates apply to Austrian imports?
A: Twenty per cent on most goods, 10 per cent on food, books, medicines and accommodation, 13 per cent on a defined list including wood and plants. Since 1 July 2026 dairy, eggs, vegetables and fruit carry 4.9 per cent.
Q: Is rail affected by the weekend ban?
A: No. The restriction applies to road vehicles, so a block train arriving at the Vienna terminal on a Saturday can still be discharged and railed onward. Only the final road leg waits.
Q: Do we need a UID number to buy on DDP?
A: Not to receive the goods, since the DDP invoice is a domestic supply. A number is needed to deduct the import VAT, and without one the 20 per cent becomes a permanent cost rather than a cash-flow item.
Get a DDP or DDU Figure for Austria
Send the commodity, the delivery postcode and the days your site can unload. The answer is a route with a named arrival day attached, because in Austria the arrival day decides whether the container moves or waits.
Samira Chen takes these enquiries on +86 13428330724 and at sales38@swwlogistics.com.cn, and she will tell you which vessel or train the slot belongs to.
