China to Finland Ice Class Door to Door Shipping Service

China to Finland Ice Class Door to Door Shipping Service

The Short Answer

Finland's map changed twice. The eastern crossings that once carried a share of China–Europe land freight have been shut since December 2023, and Russia suspended movement through the remaining railway checkpoints from 1 July 2026, so the country is now reached by sea from the south and west and by road through Sweden. The second change is seasonal rather than political: from roughly December to April, Finnish ports take ice-class tonnage under icebreaker escort, and that adds both cost and days. A Finnish door-to-door quote is really two quotes, one for open water and one for ice.

What a Booking Covers

One contract runs from your supplier's premises to a Finnish address: collection, the export declaration, the sea or air leg, the import entry lodged with Finnish Customs, duty and 25.5 per cent VAT, and delivery.

On DDP we stand as importer and absorb the duty, the VAT and any winter surcharge, so the consignee sees one figure and one invoice.

On DDU the consignee clears in its own name, pays at release, and separately takes on whatever the season has added to the freight.

What Your Buyer Must Already Have

The cleanest way to compare the two terms is not to read the prices side by side but to ask what has to exist on the Finnish side before the cargo can move.

Under DDP the answer is almost nothing. The consignee needs a delivery address and a person who can sign for the goods; the importer identity, the tax registration, the entry and the payment facility all sit with us.

Under DDU the buyer needs four things in place before the vessel arrives: a Finnish business identity, an EORI number to be named on the entry, a customs agent authorised to file on its behalf, and a payment facility with the tax administration for the import VAT. Missing any one of them holds the container at the terminal, and terminal storage in Finland is charged by the day.

How Cargo Reaches Finland

With the eastern route gone, every corridor now runs through the Baltic or across the Swedish border.

Two notes sit behind the table. Container services into Finland generally arrive as feeders from a north European hub rather than on a direct Asia call, which is why the sea band starts in the thirties. And the northern corridor through Sweden is longer on paper but often quicker to Lapland than routing a box up the country from Helsinki.

The Annual File, Not the Shipment File

Packaging responsibility runs on a yearly cycle

A business placing packaged goods on the Finnish market joins an approved producer organisation and reports its packaging data, and since 2024 that obligation reaches companies of every size rather than only the large ones. The reporting is annual and by material, so the first year is a setup exercise and later years are a comparison against the previous return.

Beverage containers carry a national excise duty

Finland levies a national excise duty on beverage containers alongside the deposit that consumers see, and both are administered separately from customs. An importer of drinks therefore has a tax registration question, not only a freight question, and it has to be settled before the first container rather than after it.

The reduced band moved at the start of 2026

Standard VAT is 25.5 per cent. The reduced band that covers food, books, accommodation and passenger transport was cut from 14 to 13.5 per cent on 1 January 2026, and a further 10 per cent applies to newspapers and magazines. Most industrial and consumer imports still land on the standard rate, so a quotation built on a reduced figure is worth rechecking.

One territory with an exception

Åland sits inside the customs union but outside the VAT territory, so goods cleared for the mainland are not automatically cleared for Mariehamn. It is one line to check at booking and an expensive one to correct afterwards.

Why Shippers Route Finnish Cargo Through Us

Finland is a country where the calendar matters as much as the commodity code. Booking a Finnish sailing in November without ice-class space is how a 34-day corridor becomes a 50-day one, and the surcharge that follows is not something a consignee expects on a DDU invoice it never asked about. Sunny Worldwide Logistics (SZ) Limited prices the open-water and ice-season cases separately, books the corridor that fits the delivery month, and keeps the entry, the invoice and the packaging return in one file so the tonnage and the customs value describe the same goods.

Collection runs on our own fleet at the Shenzhen terminal, which keeps the sailing date inside our control rather than at the edge of it.

Cargo We Move into Finland

  • Forest machinery and sawmill equipment
  • Mobile phones, network hardware and data-centre kit
  • Winter tyres and automotive components
  • Marine equipment and spare parts
  • Prefabricated building elements and insulation
  • Laboratory instruments and cleanroom supplies
  • Consumer goods for Nordic e-commerce fulfilment

The Company Behind the Entry

Sunny Worldwide Logistics (SZ) Limited has moved freight from Shenzhen since 1998, working as a domestic and international forwarder with its own transport capacity rather than a brokered network. A 1,800 square metre Class A office in Shenzhen and a trucking company at the sea port keep collection, terminal handling and the customs file inside a single organisation.

Questions Importers Ask About Finnish DDP

Q: Can cargo still transit Russia on its way to Finland?

A: No. Finland closed its eastern vehicle and pedestrian crossings indefinitely in December 2023, and Russia suspended movement through the remaining railway checkpoints from 1 July 2026, so there is no land corridor from the east in either direction.

Q: How much does winter add to a Finnish shipment?

A: It varies with the ice season and the vessel, but the mechanism is consistent: ports require ice-class tonnage under icebreaker escort between roughly December and April, and both the class premium and the escort are charged on top of the open-water rate.

Q: What does a DDU buyer need before the container arrives?

A: A Finnish business identity, an EORI number, a customs agent authorised to file for it, and a payment arrangement for the import VAT. Without all four the goods sit at the terminal, and storage accrues daily.

Q: Which VAT rate applies?

A: 25.5 per cent for most goods. The reduced band covering food, books, accommodation and passenger transport moved from 14 to 13.5 per cent on 1 January 2026, and newspapers and magazines sit at 10 per cent.

Q: Is Åland handled the same way as the mainland?

A: For customs, yes; for VAT, no. Åland is outside the Finnish VAT territory, so a consignment destined for Mariehamn needs its own treatment rather than an extension of a mainland entry.

Q: Do small importers have packaging obligations in Finland?

A: Yes. Producer responsibility widened in 2024 to cover companies of every size, and the obligation is met by joining an approved producer organisation and reporting packaging data by material each year.

Get a DDP or DDU Figure for Finland

Send the commodity, the carton count, the delivery postcode and the month you expect the cargo to sail. The month is not a formality on this lane: it decides whether the quote sits in open water or in the ice season, and the two are priced differently.

Samira Chen handles Finnish enquiries at sales38@swwlogistics.com.cn and on +86 13428330724 by phone or WhatsApp. What comes back is a corridor recommendation with a landed figure attached, rather than a freight rate that leaves the tax and the season for someone else to discover.
