Recently, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Maritime Bureau (IMB) Pirate Report Center released the report "Piracy and Armed Robbery of Ships from January 1 to June 30, 2025", urging ships to remain cautious.
According to the report, there have been 90 reported incidents in piracy and armed robbery crimes around the world, an increase of 50% from the same period in 2024, the largest number of reported incidents in the same period since 2020.
Among the reported incidents, 79 ships were boarded, 6 attempted attacks, 4 hijacking, and 1 opened fire on the ship.
Among them, 57 incidents were recorded in the Singapore Strait, accounting for about 63% of the total number of reported incidents worldwide. In the first half of 2024, 15 incidents were reported in these waters.
On the narrow and crowded waterway of the Singapore Strait, boarding large ships with over 150,000 dwt remains a major concern, especially given that the success rate of boarding in the Singapore Strait is 95%.
It is understood that 34 of the 57 reported incidents continued to use guns and knives, further exacerbating this risk.
In addition, despite the low number of incidents in the Gulf of Guinea, it still poses a significant risk to crew safety. In the first half of 2025, a total of 12 incidents occurred in the region, and 87% of the total number of crew abductions around the world occurred in the sea area.
It is worth noting that although no new piracy has occurred in the Somalia waters since April 2025, there is still a threat of potential piracy in the Somalia waters, especially as the southwest monsoon weakens in the coming months.
