Caixin: American Airlines Flight AA127 landed at Shanghai Pudong Airport at 0:00 On November 13, Beijing time.It is the first time American airlines has flown back to China after a nine-month suspension over coVID-19.Flight AA127 flies from Dallas/Fort Worth to Pudong, Shanghai, operating twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

In return, China has added hainan Airlines and Sichuan Airlines to its two airlines to fly between China and the United States, one each week. The number of flights between China and the US will be increased from 16 to 20.

Data from OAG, an analytics company, shows that a third of flights have been lost to COVID-19.Before the COVID-19 outbreak, airlines operated nearly 50,000 routes worldwide.By November, that number had fallen to more than 33,000, according to Bloomberg.

Unprofitable routes, usually to less populated destinations, were the first to be cancelled. This reflects the grim reality that operators will have to face as demand is not expected to recover until 2024 and has led to fleet downsizing and massive job cuts.At the same time, these tough decisions put entire communities at risk of being cut off.
