August 15-16,CMA CGM, a global leader in sea, land, air and logistics solutions, joined forces with SIPG Energy and Shanghai Electric to successfully refuel 8,016 tons of biomass methanol into the CMA CGM Osmem vessel at Shanghai Port.CMA CGM Osmem is a biomass-methanol dual-fuel container ship with a capacity of 13,000 TEUs. It currently serves the SEAS 2 route connecting Asia and the east coast of South America.
On August 17, the biomass methanol filling ceremony was held at Shanghai Yangshan Port. Important partners from all parties gathered together to witness and celebrate this important milestone in the development of low-carbon shipping.
This bunkering operation was performed by the bunkering ship "Haigang Zhiyuan" owned by SIPG Energy. In one fell swoop, it set a new world record for the largest amount of biomass methanol filling in a single operation, significantly surpassing the record of 3,643 tons set by this round earlier this year.
New benchmark for global biomass methanol filling
Uphold“Net-zero carbon emissions by 2050”With the ambitious goal of achieving the goal, CMA CGM continues to promote its energy transformation strategy relying on its diversified technology solution portfolio. To support this goal, the Group is investing heavily in ships powered by LNG, biomethane and biomass methanol. Currently,CMA CGM operates one of the world's largest dual-fuel fleets and plans to deploy 200 ships that can use low-carbon fuels by 2031 to continue to accelerate the decarbonization of the maritime industry.
SIPG Energy relies on its port operation capabilities to provide safe and efficient marine fuel bunkering services; Shanghai Electric is responsible for supplying the domestic biomass methanol from its Taonan production base. With the strong support of the port regulatory authorities and the close collaboration of all parties, this operation was completed safely, smoothly and orderly, and Shanghai Port's large-scale biomass methanol supply and filling service capabilities have reached a new level.
Most of the biomass methanol injected this time is produced by Shanghai Electric’s Taonan biomass methanol project in Jilin Province. After the fuel is transported from Taonan to Dalian Port for consolidation, transfer and storage, it is then sent to Shanghai by sea, and finally bunkering is completed at Shanghai Port. By connecting the biomass methanol production base in Northeast China with the Shanghai international shipping hub, this record-breaking operation further strengthens China's collaborative capabilities in production, warehousing, transportation and bunkering.
Join hands with Chinese partners to promote decarbonization of the shipping industry
This cooperation marks an important step in CMA CGM’s decarbonization journey and also injects impetus into accelerating the energy transformation of the shipping industry. The entire process began with the "Long-term Biomass Methanol Supply Cooperation Agreement" officially signed by CMA CGM, SIPG Energy and Shanghai Electric on March 20, 2025, aiming to jointly create a complete integrated biomass methanol value chain. This milestone willThe combination of CMA CGM's global low-carbon shipping ambitions and the industrial capabilities and port infrastructure advantages of its Chinese partners fully demonstrates how cross-industry collaboration can provide scalable alternative marine energy solutions for the global energy transition.
This major breakthrough also provides strong support for Shanghai Port to build an internationally leading low-carbon fuel refueling hub, consolidates Shanghai Port's pioneering and leading role in the decarbonization process of the shipping industry, and further consolidates Shanghai's status as a world-class sustainable maritime trade center.
Christine Kabu, Executive Vice President of CMA CGM Group, said:"This achievement is an important milestone in CMA CGM's promotion of shipping decarbonization. It not only breaks the global biomass methanol filling record, but also shows that through close collaboration between the upstream and downstream of the industry chain, the large-scale application of alternative marine fuels is gradually becoming a reality. CMA CGM will continue to work with Chinese partners to accelerate the development and application of sustainable fuel solutions and jointly promote the long-term green transformation of the global shipping industry."
Zhang Da, general manager of SIPG Energy, said:"This domestic biomass methanol bunkering is not only a breakthrough in the single bunkering volume record, but also an important manifestation of the improvement of Shanghai Port's green fuel bunkering comprehensive service level. By continuing to improve the domestic biomass methanol resource organization and bunkering capabilities, we are accelerating the promotion of green ship fuel supply from a single demonstration Moving towards large-scale and regular services. SIPG Energy will continue to work with CMA CGM and industry chain partners to further smooth the biomass methanol supply chain, provide shipping companies with safer, more efficient and stable green fuel services, and contribute to the green and low-carbon development of Shanghai International Shipping Center.”
