It is reported that MSC, the world's largest shipping company, announced that it has begun to develop air cargo solutions and enter the air transport market.
In response to customer demand, MSC said it has started developing a new air freight solution, 'MSC Air Cargo', as a complementary service to its container shipping solution.

The MSC Air Cargo has been in development for several months, the company said.Service will begin in early 2023 following delivery of the first of four MSC-branded Boeing 777-200F aircraft, the first aircraft will be operated by Atlas Air.

Soren Toft, CEO of MSC, said: “It is a pleasure to announce the progress of MSC Air Cargo,This is MSC's first step into the air freight market, we plan to continue to explore various avenues to develop air cargo to complement MSC's core business of container shipping. "

It is reported that MSC has appointed Jannie Davel to form a team in charge of its air cargo business. Jannie Davel has nearly 30 years of experience in the air cargo industry, having held executive positions at Delta Cargo, Emirates SkyCargo and DHL.

MSC is the latest shipping company to announce its foray into the air freight market. Previously, Maersk and CMA CGM have established air cargo divisions to provide air freight services. This trend is part of a strategic shift by major shipping companies to become integrated logistics service providers capable of providing customers with ocean, air, trucking, warehousing, last-mile delivery and more.

In April this year, Maersk announced the formal establishment of Maersk Air Cargo, an air cargo company, to meet customer needs through integrated logistics services. The company also completed the acquisition of air freight forwarder Senator International in June this year.

"We are finding more and more that our customers really need an end-to-end logistics solution," said Michel Pozas Lucic, Maersk's head of global air cargo. "They are looking for this one-stop shop that not only removes the complexity of logistics performance, and can make it an optimized, efficient and effective solution.”

In February last year, CMA CGM purchased four freighters and announced the formal establishment of CMA CGM Air Cargo, an air cargo division. In May this year, the company said it had signed a cooperation agreement with Air France-KLM, Europe's largest airline group, to reach a long-term strategic partnership in the air cargo sector.
