No.1 Canadian port strike continues, with over $19 billion in cargo stranded

Canadian West Coast port workers have been on strike since Saturday, July 1st. Negotiations between the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) and the Canadian ILWU Union have reached a deadlock. On July 4th, negotiations were announced to be suspended pending further discussions with federal mediators.

Due to the strike, cargo loading and unloading of ships at Canadian West Coast ports have been suspended since June 30th, with 29 ports stranded and a backlog of goods worth up to $19 billion. This number is expected to increase further.

Vancouver Port and Rupert Port are the two most affected ports. The goods passing through these ports mainly include key automotive components (such as brakes), other automotive and manufacturing components, holiday supplies, and consumer goods.

NO.2 Port of Guangzhou: the cargo throughput in the first six months is expected to increase by 4.1% year on year

Port of Guangzhou recently announced that in June, the company expected to complete container throughput of 2.081 million TEUs, up 1.6% year on year; It is expected to complete a cargo throughput of 48.282 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 0.3%.

In the first six months, it is expected to achieve a container throughput of 11.474 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 4.4%; It is expected to complete a cargo throughput of 274 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.1%.

NO.3 Ningbo Port: Expected to achieve a year-on-year increase of 1% in cargo throughput in June

Recently, Ningbo Port announced that the company expects to complete a container throughput of 3.75 million TEUs in June, a year-on-year decrease of 2%; It is expected to achieve a cargo throughput of 91.3 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1%.

In the first half of 2023, it is expected to achieve a cumulative container throughput of 21.32 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 1.3%, and a cumulative cargo throughput of 554.65 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.1%.

NO.4 Gulf of Tonkin Port: cargo throughput in June increased by 15.47% year-on-year

Recently, the Gulf of Tonkin Port announced that the cargo throughput in June was 28195700 tons, up 15.47% year on year; Among them, the container portion was 658200 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 15.06%.

The cumulative cargo throughput this year was 149106600 tons, a year-on-year increase of 7.62%; Among them, the container portion was 3.6074 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 13.98%

NO.5 Record breaking delivery volume of new container ships in June

According to Asian based container watcher Linerlytica, the new delivery volume of container ships reached 277873 teu in June, setting a new record for the highest level of new ship delivery capacity in a single month.

Linerlytica warns that the total number of new ships delivered in the first six months of this year has reached 148, totaling 979344 teu. Even after preparing for a decline in delivery, more than 1.2 million teu will still be delivered in the second half of this year.

By the end of 2023, the annual delivery volume will reach 2.2 million teu, which will also set a new record for annual delivery volume, surpassing the 1.7 million teu delivered in 2015.

In the past three years, the container shipping industry has ordered a record number of container ships, with a current order volume of approximately 8 million TEUs.
