It is reported that on the afternoon of May 20, at the Colombo anchorage, the cargo on board the container ship "X-PRESS PEARL" suddenly caught fire.

The Sri Lankan Navy is extinguishing fires and dispatched two maritime patrol ships, Sagara and Sindura naval ships, a fast assault boat, and a fire-fighting tug from Sri Lanka.

As of 0330 UTC on May 21, the ship was still in the same position, fire fighting continued, and offshore tugboats were also deployed.

"A special team composed of personnel from the Sri Lanka Navy and Port Authority (SLPA) boarded the ship that night (20th) and checked the condition of the ship. They suspected that the chemical substance transported had reacted and caused a fire." The Sri Lanka Navy said.

The spokesperson of the Sri Lanka Navy, Captain Indika De Silva, said at a press conference held today that “according to the yellow smoke observed at the scene, it is preliminarily determined that the smoke is the result of a chemical reaction between the ship’s chemicals and rainwater.”

The special forces of the Navy and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard are still on standby to respond to possible emergencies. There are 25 crew members on board from the Philippines, China, India and Russia. This ship can be said to be brand new. It was built in China and only started trading in February this year.
