Shipping Department announced that it will suspend pickup

Samira Samira 2025-09-09 14:31:38

Sunny Worldwide LogisticsIt is a logistics company with more than 20 years of transportation experience, focusing on European, American, Canadian, Australian, Southeast Asia and other markets, and is more than the owner of the cargo owner~

recently, Alaska Marine Lines, Alaska Shipping Company It said it will suspend the transportation of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Fire problems and the possibility of toxic and out-of-control fires caused by lithium-ion batteries continue to put heavy pressure on the shipping industry. Alaska Marine Lines has become the latest shipping company that reports that it will no longer transport electric vehicles or plug-in hybrid vehicles due to increased safety risks.

Alaska Marine Lines operates important freight barge services across Alaska and Hawaii, and is an important channel for transporting commercial goods.

"Although we have shipped electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids before, the increased complexity and fire risk posed by transporting large lithium-ion batteries at sea has prompted us to reassess how best to protect the safety of our employees and equipment. While problems with lithium-ion batteries rarely occur, this type of fire cannot be extinguished or controlled, especially at sea, can have catastrophic consequences."

The new policy will come into effect immediately for Central Alaska, Western Alaska and Hawaii. The company said it will continue to ship the vehicles to Southeast Alaska in the coming weeks until September 1. The decision will not affect other hybrid vehicles, small electric recreational vehicles, electric bicycles and four-wheelers. Alaska Marine Lines said that the ability to transport these vehicles safely will continue to be reassessed as industry standards and safety procedures improve.

Alaska public media stressed that these restrictions are particularly difficult for the Southeast, where electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular. Alaska’s Alaska Marine Highway System and its ferries will continue to transport electric vehicles in a limited manner.

Alaska Marine Lines' policy is similar to Matson's decision announced in June. The shipping company reported that its ships from California to Hawaii and Guam will no longer transport electric vehicles, despite precautions that have been taken to control possible fires.

On June 3, a fire broke out on the car transport ship "Morning Midas" and the crew could not control the fire. The ship was abandoned in the central Pacific Ocean about 300 miles southwest of the remote Aleutian Islands. The ship carries about 3,000 cars, including about 800 electric vehicles.

Shipowner Zodiac Maritime Agencies said on June 24 that rescuers reported that the Morning Midas, built in 2006, sank in the northern waters at 4:35 p.m. UK time. Electric vehicles have always been a concern for the shipping industry, and there are countless reports about car fires. Due to the battery, the fire is more difficult to deal with.

Previously, Matson Steeler has also announced that the company has suspended the transportation of battery-powered electric vehicles or plug-in hybrid vehicles due to the classification of hazardous substances for lithium-ion batteries.

Here we remind that cargo owners and freight forwarders who are involved in related businesses should pay attention to keeping abreast of the latest changes in time to avoid unnecessary losses.
