According to recent news, the latest report released by the Peruvian National Emergency Operations Center shows that Japan's central and northern Pacific coast areas encountered unprecedented abnormal waves. These huge waves not only violently impacted the coastline, but also caused serious disasters such as seawater intrusion.
According to preliminary statistics, 81 ports have been forced to close due to safety concerns, causing disruption to maritime traffic.
Port closures affect the import, export and transshipment of goods, and may also lead to cargo detention and delays, increasing transportation costs and uncertainty.
In addition, abnormal waves may impact port facilities, such as docks, warehouses, and loading and unloading equipment, causing damage or functional failure. Damaged port facilities require repair and maintenance, which will affect the normal operations and efficiency of the port.
As an important trading partner of South America, Peru's port closure may affect trade with neighboring countries and international markets.
Many coastal towns in Peru have been violently hit by huge waves for several days, which not only destroyed coastal infrastructure, but also directly threatened the lives of residents.
Several ships were severely damaged in this sudden disaster, and some were even swept away by the waves. The fishermen were unable to return to the port in time due to the closure of the port, and were trapped at sea in extremely dangerous situations.
What is even more serious is that about 20 fishermen encountered a sudden change while operating at sea and were trapped on the fishing boat. They are currently anxiously waiting for emergency rescue by the military.
Seawater intrusion has occurred in many places. Large areas of beaches and coastal urban areas have been submerged by seawater, causing damage to residents' houses and seriously affecting their lives. Water and electricity were even cut off in some areas, exacerbating the living difficulties of residents.
The Peruvian Navy stated in its latest statement that the impact of this abnormal wave phenomenon on coastal areas is expected to last until early January 2025.
This means that in the future, Peru's coastal areas will continue to face the threat of disasters such as huge waves and seawater intrusion, and it is necessary to continue to carry out prevention and response work.
China and Peru signed a free trade agreement on April 28, 2009, and it was implemented on March 1, 2010. China and Peru will implement zero tariffs in phases on more than 90% of their respective products, involving light industry, electronics, machinery, fruits, etc. A variety of products have enabled the two countries to join hands in entering the "zero-tariff era."
According to statistics from the General Administration of Customs, from January to October 2024, China's imports and exports to Peru were 254.69 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 16.8%.
Among them, China's exports of mechanical and electrical products to Peru were 40.43 billion yuan, an increase of 18.1%, accounting for 50.2% of China's total exports to Peru during the same period. Among them, exports of automobiles and spare parts, mobile phones, computers, and household appliances increased by 8.7%, 29.1%, 29.3%, and 34.7% respectively.
China exported 16.5 billion yuan of labor products to Peru, an increase of 8.3%, accounting for 20.5%. Among them, exports of textiles and clothing and plastic products increased by 9.1% and 14.3% respectively.
We would like to remind cargo owners and freight forwarders who have recently shipped goods to Peru to pay attention to the changes in the situation and arrange shipments reasonably to avoid any unnecessary losses or troubles.
