The air cargo aircraft modification market is heating up, and high demand prompts Atlas Air and DHL to buy cargo aircraft in large quantities
The air cargo plane modification market is heating up, and the first A321 cargo plane modification has been delivered.
Covid-19 has greatly promoted the express delivery and e-commerce business. In 2020, international air express delivery increased by about 8-9%, while the domestic market in the United States increased by about 9%. SF Express’s shipments in 2020 have increased by 70% compared to 2019.
At present, people are very excited about the air cargo market, especially when most businesses are operating at a high level of demand.

On Tuesday, Atlas Air Worldwide and DHL Express announced the purchase of a large number of cargo planes from Boeing to help the demand trend of the air cargo market.
Atlas Air has ordered 4 747-8 freighters and become part of the world’s largest 747 fleet. These aircraft are expected to be delivered from May to October 2022; the express department of Deutsche Post DHL said Eight 777 freighters will be purchased, and the first batch of 777 freighters will be delivered in 2022.
This investment was made when the air cargo industry was booming. When the new crown virus destroyed global transportation, manufacturing and retail activities in June last year, the air transportation industry recovered from the bottom of the market, with demand exceeding 35% at one time.

Last week, Amazon confirmed that its aviation logistics group has purchased 11 Boeing 767 aircraft and will modify them to convert them into freighters. In the past year, one of the main drivers of air cargo growth was e-commerce. DHL Express said its global e-commerce transaction volume increased by more than 40% in the fourth quarter.
Rakutan Intelligence reports that compared to 2019, online sales in the U.S. in the fall increased by 51%. AdobeAnalytics analysis estimates that online spending during the holiday shopping season is 189 billion U.S. dollars, and predicts that e-commerce sales in 2022 will reach a record of 6.54 trillion U.S. dollars, higher than the 3.53 trillion U.S. dollars in 2019
Many retailers stated that online sales in recent months have exceeded 50% of their total sales.
"By ordering eight new wide-body freighters, we firmly believe that e-commerce is a lasting megatrend. That's why we decided to take action as early as possible and invest in our future from 2021." John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express Say.
Boeing recently predicted that due to the growth of cross-border trade and e-commerce, air cargo volume will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4% in the next 20 years, and the global cargo fleet needs to grow by 60%, including freighters manufactured by 930 factories.
In 2018, DHL Express ordered 14 777 freighters and has received 10 of them. The company said this helped it meet unprecedented demand during the peak transportation period last year. The 777 aircraft has largely replaced its leased 747-400 aircraft.
The 777 has long-range and heavy-duty capabilities with a maximum payload of 225,000 pounds, allowing operators to reduce the number of stops and related landing fees.

DHL Express operates more than 260 dedicated aircraft in cooperation with 17 partner airlines.
Atlas Air has 53 747 aircraft, including 10 747-8 and 34 747-400 all-cargo aircraft. The 747-8 is similar in appearance to the 747-400, but has a higher gross weight, a longer fuselage and a wider wingspan, an updated system and improved aerodynamics. The maximum payload is 303,686 pounds. Compared with the -400 model, it provides 20% of the payload capacity while using 16% of the fuel. According to Boeing, the 787 Dreamliner also uses General Electric engines, which reduces noise by 30%.
