The recent turmoil in Canadian ports has triggered a series of chain reactions.

Two of Canada's most important ports on the West Coast shut down

Recently, the two most important container ports on Canada’s west coastport of vancouver(Port of Vancouver) andprince rupert(Port of Prince Rupert)general strike, fell into a shutdown crisis.

In response to the strike, the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) decided to implement a coast-wide defensive lockout (i.e. employer-initiated lockout) for all workers of ILWU Local 514.

The move could halt all of the association's cargo operations in British Columbia, Canada, bringing a significant amount of trade to a standstill at the Port of Vancouver, Canada's busiest port, and the third-busiest Port of Prince Rupert, jeopardizing 4 million a day in cargo shipping. trade volume.

Shipping giant Maersk has issued customer alerts and updated relevant shipping business dynamics.

·Vancouver TP1 service:

The "Maersk Leticia" is currently operating and is expected to complete the operation and leave the port on November 2 (Saturday).

"Marcos V" is expected to arrive on November 3 (Sunday) and depart on November 6. The ship may not begin operations unless negotiations are resolved before then. Marcos V will begin operations as soon as negotiations are concluded and operations resume.

·Prince Rupert TP1 service:

The "Brickell" is currently operating and is expected to complete the operation and leave the port on November 2 (Saturday). The "San Felipe" is expected to arrive on November 4 (Monday) and depart on November 6. Maersk will postpone operations of the San Felipe, which will begin operations as soon as negotiations are concluded and operations resume.

·Surrey CASUR Services:

The "Seattle Express" is expected to arrive at the port on November 8. Maersk will continue to provide updates on the progress of the negotiations and whether they will impact operations on this and other vessels.

Strikes and blockades occurred in Vancouver and Prince Rupert, which had a direct and far-reaching impact on the U.S. Line. Up to 20% of U.S. line imports are transited through Vancouver and Prince Rupert. Especially for inland points in the Midwestern United States, transit at Prince Rupert is the best option.

At the same time, strikes at these two major ports will bring greater pressure to the ports of Seattle and Tacoma in the United States. The two ports are currently dealing with larger-than-expected cargo movements due to brief strikes and possible secondary strikes on the U.S. East Coast and Mexico coast.

If this situation continues, it will also affect the operations of Los Angeles/Long Beach, the largest port area in the United States, especially rail transshipment and affect the global container network.

Port of Montreal strikes indefinitely

Prior to this, indefinite strikes had begun at the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals in the Port of Montreal on Canada's east coast, led by the Montreal Port Longshoremen's Union CUPE Local 375.

In response to the strike, the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) announced on November 2 that wage protection for all non-employed dockworkers, excluding the bulk sector and essential services, would be suspended from 7:00 a.m. on November 5 workers. The MEA said the move was a mitigation measure to mitigate the financial impact of frequent strikes.

MEA also noted that the union had rejected the association’s proposal for accelerated negotiations with the support of government mediators and launched an unlimited strike on October 31, which directly affected the operations of the two terminals,Stopped 40% of container traffic at the port.

It is reported that the ships that may be affected include the "MSC Jordan III" which will arrive at the Viau terminal on Tuesday, and the "MSC Lisa" and "MSC Don Giovanni" which will arrive at the Masionneuve terminal on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

As dockworkers on the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States are very likely to launch a second strike in January next year, the strike crisis currently facing Canada will undoubtedly bring major challenges to port operations and supply chains in North America.

We would like to remind cargo owners and freight forwarders to pay attention to the operating status of local ports in real time and adjust transportation plans in a timely manner according to the latest situation.
