Cheap Freight China to Spain Door to Door Shipping Service

The Short Answer

Spain puts two costs into a door-to-door quote that most other European destinations do not. Import VAT is charged on a base including the freight and the customs duty, not just the invoice value, and non-reusable plastic packaging carries a national tax of 0.45 euros per kilogram of non-recycled plastic. DDP absorbs both into one invoice; DDU leaves them to your Spanish buyer.

What Each Term Puts in Whose Name

A door-to-door booking to Spain runs under a single contract from your supplier's premises in China to a Spanish address: collection, export clearance, the trunk movement by sea, rail or air, the Spanish import declaration, and final delivery.

Choose DDP and the entry is lodged in our name. We are the importer of record, we settle the customs duty and the 21 per cent import VAT, and your buyer receives cleared cargo against one invoice.

Choose DDU and your buyer takes the entry. We still carry the goods to the agreed address, but the declaration, the duty and the VAT sit with the consignee and its own customs agent.

Deciding Between Them, Step by Step

Step 1 — Check the consignee's registration. A Spanish business holding an NIF and filing returns can absorb an import charge and recover it; a private buyer or a foreign company taking delivery in Spain cannot. If not, DDP is the only workable route.

Step 2 — Ask who holds the fiscal representation. A business outside the European Union cannot register for Spanish VAT without a representative, and cannot do it quickly. Where the consignee has none in place, DDP uses ours.

Step 3 — Put a number on the plastic tax. Non-reusable plastic packaging is taxed at 0.45 euros per kilogram of non-recycled plastic and must appear as a separate invoice line. On DDP that line is ours; on DDU it is the consignee's.

Step 4 — Compare the cash, not the rate. On DDU the consignee funds duty and VAT at release and recovers the VAT later; on DDP we fund it and price the recovery in. The gap is a cash-flow figure, and it moves with the consignee's filing cycle.

The Spanish Rules That Shape the Quote

A fiscal representative is mandatory, and it sets the clock

A non-EU business cannot register for Spanish VAT on its own. Spanish practice requires a fiscal representative, jointly liable for the tax handled and therefore scrutinising the importer's records before accepting the mandate. Registration takes roughly 40 days for an EU or UK applicant but 45 to 60 days outside the Union, the most common reason a Spanish launch slips a month.

The import VAT base is wider than the invoice

Spanish import VAT is calculated on the customs value plus the customs duty, the transport cost and the insurance up to the first destination in Spain. The 21 per cent therefore applies to a figure already containing the freight, so buyers comparing quotations on FOB values are comparing the wrong numbers. The general rate is 21 per cent, with 10 and 4 per cent for defined categories.

Deferral exists, but it is granted rather than assumed

Spain does allow import VAT to be moved into a later return, through a specific authorisation from the tax agency together with a guarantee. It is a case-by-case permission tied to the importer's standing, not a standing entitlement. A consignee that has secured it will usually prefer DDU, because the tax never leaves its account.

The plastic tax is Spanish, and it is easy to miss

Spain introduced a tax on non-reusable plastic packaging on 1 January 2023 at 0.45 euros per kilogram of non-recycled plastic content, and remains the only member state to levy one on that basis. The charge attaches to the packaging, falls on whichever party manufactures, imports or acquires the goods, is self-assessed on Form 592 and must appear separately on the commercial invoice. Recycled content falls outside the charge, so a supplier able to document it cuts the bill with evidence rather than negotiation.

Packaging registration has no small-volume escape

Royal Decree 1055/2022 requires every producer placing packaged goods on the Spanish market to register in the producers' register and join an approved collective scheme. There is no de minimis: a hundred units a year creates the obligation. Full responsibility extends to commercial and industrial packaging alongside household, catching many business-to-business sellers who assumed the rules did not reach them. Companies outside Spain must appoint an authorised representative to hold the registration, household packaging has needed Triman marking and recycling information since 1 January 2025, and fines run into seven figures.

The EU layer sits on top

The 150 euro duty exemption ended on 1 July 2026 and a temporary duty of 3 euros per category of goods now applies, expected to run until 1 July 2028. An EU economic operator has had to be named on the product or its packaging since 13 December 2024, an artwork-stage item rather than a port one. Importers of steel, aluminium, cement, fertiliser, electricity and hydrogen have faced the carbon border adjustment mechanism in its definitive form since 1 January 2026, reporting embedded emissions and surrendering certificates. From 12 August 2026 the EU packaging regulation applies directly in all member states.

Routes into Spain

Sea freight through Valencia, Algeciras and Barcelona

Valencia is the busiest container port on the Mediterranean and the fourth largest in the European Union, with rail connections inland to Madrid and Zaragoza. Algeciras handles around five million TEU a year, the fastest Mediterranean routing for southern deliveries. Barcelona serves Catalonia and the north-east. Allow 34 to 48 days door to door once release and inland haulage are included.

Rail through the Yiwu–Madrid corridor

Block trains from Chinese inland hubs reach the Madrid terminal, with onward trucking to most of peninsular Spain. Rail lands in the 20 to 28 day band and suits consignments that cannot wait for a vessel but cannot justify air rates. It is also less exposed to peak-season congestion at Mediterranean terminals.

Air freight through Madrid-Barajas and Zaragoza

Madrid-Barajas is Spain's largest airport by cargo volume and one of the five busiest in Europe. Zaragoza, the country's second cargo airport, is freight-focused and often better when a charter or consolidated load needs a slot. Airfreight reaches most Spanish addresses in 6 to 10 days door to door.

Exclusions worth stating plainly

This page covers peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla sit outside the EU customs and VAT territory and are quoted separately.

Why Shippers Route Spanish Cargo Through Us

The port-to-ship leg is ours rather than a subcontracted one. Sunny Worldwide Logistics (SZ) Limited owns a trucking company at the Shenzhen sea port, so the container movement from your supplier to the vessel is scheduled by the same desk that books the sailing and files the Spanish entry.

Holding the invoice, packing list and declaration in one place matters more here than for most destinations: the customs value on the entry feeds straight into the VAT base and, where packaging is taxable, into the plastic tax return. A figure that disagrees is the usual reason a Spanish file is queried after delivery.

Questions Importers Ask About Spanish DDP

Q: Is a fiscal representative really obligatory for a non-EU company?

A: Yes. A business outside the European Union cannot complete a Spanish VAT registration alone, and the representative carries joint liability for the tax it handles. Budget the registration as a lead-time item: about 40 days for an EU or UK applicant, 45 to 60 days from outside the Union.

Q: Who pays the plastic tax on a door-to-door shipment?

A: The party that brings the goods into Spain. On DDP that is us, priced into the rate; on DDU it falls to whoever is named as importer. Since it must appear as a separate invoice line, confirm which side of the quotation carries it before the goods ship.

Q: Is import VAT charged on the freight as well as the goods?

A: It is. The Spanish base takes the customs value, adds the duty, the transport cost and the insurance through to the first destination in Spain, then applies the rate. Two quotations identical on goods value can differ once freight sits inside that base.

Q: Can the import VAT be postponed in Spain?

A: Only where a specific authorisation is in place, supported by a guarantee and granted against the importer's compliance record. No general entitlement exists, which is why a Spanish consignee already holding it often prefers to clear in its own name.

Q: Does packaging registration apply if our volumes are small?

A: It does. There is no minimum threshold, so a hundred units a year creates the obligation, and the rules cover commercial and industrial packaging as well as household. Sellers outside Spain must appoint an authorised representative to hold the registration, and household packaging has needed Triman marking and recycling information since 1 January 2025.

Q: Do the Canary Islands follow the same rules as mainland Spain?

A: No. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla sit outside the European Union customs and VAT territory, operating their own indirect tax and import formalities. Cargo for those destinations is quoted separately, not as an extension of a mainland rate.
