Sunny Worldwide LogisticsIt is a logistics company with more than 20 years of transportation experience, specializing in markets such as Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Southeast Asia. It is more of a cargo owner than a cargo owner~

According to foreign media reports, on November 10, local time, a container ship "Rhine Maersk" owned by Maersk was en route from Cote d'Ivoire to Algeciras. A fire broke out in a container on the ship, and the ship was forced to make an emergency diversion to dock at Teneri. Free port.

According to reports, when the accident occurred, five containers carrying coal and cotton caught fire on the ship. It was initially determined that the cause of the fire was an increase in temperature in the storage area; another eight containers suffered structural damage due to the fire. The ship carried a total of 2,053 containers, including fully loaded cargo containers and empty containers.

After the accident, the ship's crew managed to quickly put out the fire. After docking at the port, emergency crews quickly filled the affected container with water while cooling adjacent containers, averting an emergency that could have become more serious.

The local fire department sent units as a precaution, but by the time they arrived, the incident was under control.

"Rhine Maersk" will transfer its berth to the container terminal in Tenerife to unload the containers damaged by the fire and will resume work once the work is completed before continuing to Algeciras.

Subsequent shipping schedules will be delayed

Information shows that the "Rhine Maersk" was built in 2012, flies the Danish flag, has a length of 249.12 meters, a width of 37.43 meters, a capacity of 4622TEU, and is currently deployed on Maersk's WAF3 route.

The fire incident caused delays to the subsequent shipping schedule of the "Rhine Maersk". According to the latest ship dynamics information, the ship is still anchored in the Port of Tenerife.

According to Spanish media reports, the ship has unloaded 13 containers at the Container Terminal (TCT) of the Port of Tenerife. A Maersk spokesperson confirmed that "the small number of affected containers have been unloaded". The vessel is expected to resume sailing to Tangier Med Port once the onboard assessment is completed and the vessel is deemed seaworthy.

In the latest update, it was revealed that the fire may have been caused by a malfunction in one of the refrigerated containers. The crew's quick response averted a major disaster, but the incident exposed some key challenges and controversies in maritime safety and emergency response.

Although overall ship losses have dropped by more than 50% over the past decade, container ship fires remain a persistent threat, occurring on average once every 60 days, according to insurance giant Allianz.

Allianz said in a report that misdeclared and mispackaged goods were problems, while dangerous goods regulations and guidelines existed but were not fully enforced and adhered to.

It is worth noting that just a few months before the "Rhine Maersk" incident, another Maersk cargo ship, the "Maersk Frankfurt", also suffered a more serious fire accident off the coast of India, resulting in the death of one crew member. This incident further highlights the importance of enhanced maritime safety and emergency response.

We once again appeal to all cargo owners and freight forwarders to truthfully declare the name of the goods when booking space, and ensure that the customs pre-allocated manifest, customs declaration and bill of lading information are consistent. No concealment, omission or misstatement is allowed to avoid liquidated damages.

Major port maritime affairs, ports, shipping companies, etc. have been strictly investigating the concealment of dangerous goods and other related behaviors. You need to be cautious when shipping and be careful not to hit a mine!
