China to Croatia Door to Door Rijeka Direct Shipping Service
The Short Answer
Croatia stopped being a market served by truck from another country's port. A second container terminal opened at Rijeka in September 2025, the port became a regular call on a direct Asia–Adriatic service, and a Croatian address can now be reached through a Croatian entry. That fact decides most DDP and DDU questions, because a Croatian entry carries duty and 25 per cent import VAT, while cargo released at Koper or Trieste and driven south crosses the border with no duty line and only a self-assessed acquisition. Two different products, not two prices for one.
What a Door-to-Door Booking Covers
One contract runs from your supplier's premises to the Croatian address: pickup, export declaration, main carriage, the entry at whichever gateway the routing selects, and the delivery itself, ferry leg included where the address needs one.
Under DDP the declaration is lodged with us as importer of record, and duty, import VAT and the Croatian packaging charge sit inside the price. Under DDU the consignee becomes importer, lodges the declaration, pays at release and deducts afterwards; the freight stays ours and the tax relationship becomes theirs.
Two Ways In, and They Are Not Interchangeable
Rijeka: a Croatian entry
Rijeka is the only Croatian port with direct calls from Asia, and since 2025 it has run two competing terminals. Adriatic Gate Container Terminal, in the ICTSI group since 2011, passed four million TEU in October 2026 after a 35 million euro crane investment. Rijeka Gateway, opened in September 2025 by APM Terminals and ENNA, handled more than 370,000 TEU in its first year, with rail at 53 per cent of cargo and a fifteen-minute average truck turnaround.
Because the vessel calls Croatia, the box is declared in Croatia: duty at the tariff rate, 25 per cent import VAT on the customs value, and a Croatian MRN that later anchors the packaging report.
Koper and Trieste: a Croatian delivery
Koper handled 1,272,161 TEU in 2025, twelve per cent up on the year before, and much of it is bound for hinterland markets that include Croatia. Goods released there are in free circulation before the truck reaches Bregana, so the crossing is not an import: no duty, no Croatian entry, and VAT accounted for by the buyer as an intra-Community acquisition.
What that does to a quotation
A price including duty can only exist where duty is charged. On the Koper path the duty line is zero, so a Croatian DDP rate claiming to bundle duty carries hidden margin or was built without anyone checking which border the goods crossed.
Five Questions That Settle DDP or DDU
1. Where will the entry be lodged? Rijeka means somebody must be importer of record in Croatia. Koper means nobody does, and the DDP question collapses into a delivery question.
2. Does the buyer hold a Croatian PDV number and file monthly? A registered business absorbs an import charge and recovers the VAT. A private buyer or a newly formed entity cannot, which removes DDU from the table.
3. Does the buyer want duty inside its cost of goods? Duty is not recoverable. DDP fixes it into landed cost before VAT; DDU leaves it on the buyer's declaration as a cost rather than a credit.
4. Who is the producer for the packaging charge? Croatian rules treat the third-country importer and the EU introducer as producers, so the reporting duty follows the entry and not the ownership.
5. Will the goods be split across addresses? One entry can feed several mainland deliveries, but each island address needs its own ferry booking and delivery slot.
How Cargo Reaches a Croatian Address
Rijeka — best for Zagreb, Slavonia and fixed deadlines. Direct Asia calls mean no re-handling at a northern hub, where Adriatic schedules usually lose their days. 30 to 40 days door to door. Skip it if the commodity carries a duty rate the buyer would rather avoid.
Koper — best for Istria and the north-west. Daily rail and truck across the Slovenian border put Zagreb a day from the quay. 28 to 38 days. Skip it if the buyer needs a Croatian import document.
Trieste and Venice feeders — best for LCL and split loads. Consolidation boxes arrive here more often than at Rijeka. 30 to 42 days. Skip it for a full container that could have called Rijeka.
Split and Ploče — best for Dalmatia and the islands. Ploče also serves the Bosnian corridor through Mostar and Sarajevo. 32 to 42 days before the ferry. Skip it for inland Croatia, where Rijeka is closer.
Zagreb by air — best for samples and urgent spares. 5 to 8 days, on thin capacity and usually through a larger European hub, so the promise depends on the connection.
The Last Kilometre Is Sometimes Water
Krk and Pag are bridged, and there the easy assumptions end. Brač, Hvar, Korčula and Lastovo are ferry-only. Split to Supetar takes about fifty minutes, and a forty-foot container is a booked freight slot rather than a vehicle that turns up and boards. In July and August the crossing competes with tourist traffic, so an island date quoted without a reservation belongs to nobody.
The far south has its own history. The Pelješac Bridge, 2,404 metres, opened on 26 July 2022 and removed the need for a Dubrovnik truck to pass through the Neum corridor in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The southern coast now stays inside the European Union for the whole journey.
The Croatian Filings That Follow the Cargo
Packaging is where Croatia differs from most of the Union: the state fund collects instead of a licensed scheme. The Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund charges a packaging fee on whoever first places packaged goods on the Croatian market, and its producer definition covers the third-country importer, the EU introducer and the domestic manufacturer alike.
The trigger is the detail worth knowing. For an import the basis is the customs declaration date and its MRN; for an introduction from another member state it is the invoice date. Returns go in monthly, quarterly or annually, and a nil return is still a return.
The deposit rose to ten cents on 1 January 2025 from seven, still among the lowest in the Union, and tetrapak cartons join on 1 January 2027. Fees on goods later exported can be reclaimed, so a re-export programme should keep its MRNs.
Why Shippers Route Croatian Cargo Through Us
The first mile is ours rather than bought in. Sunny Worldwide Logistics (SZ) Limited runs a trucking company at the Shenzhen sea port, so the movement from your factory to the vessel is scheduled by the desk that books the sailing and prepares the Croatian entry.
Croatia rewards that because the file has to survive a fork: a consignment can be quoted as a Croatian import or as a north Adriatic acquisition, each needing different evidence and different buyer registrations. Holding routing and documentation in one place stops cargo arriving under one shape while the invoice describes the other.

Questions Importers Ask About Croatian DDP
Q: Does every shipment into Croatia pay duty?
A: No, and that is the first thing to establish. Cargo declared at Rijeka pays duty at the tariff rate; cargo released at Koper or Trieste is in free circulation before it reaches Croatia, so it crosses without a duty line and the buyer accounts for VAT as an acquisition.
Q: Can you still quote DDP if the goods enter through Slovenia?
A: We can quote a delivered price with the freight, the Slovenian entry and the Croatian leg inside it, and we can manage the delivery. What we cannot honestly include is duty, because none is charged on an intra-Community movement. A rate labelled DDP on that routing describes delivery, not a tax position.
Q: Is the 25 per cent import VAT recoverable?
A: For a Croatian business filing returns, yes, through the normal deduction. On DDP we fund the VAT at release and price the funding period in; on DDU the consignee pays and recovers on its own cycle, which is a cash-flow difference rather than a cost difference.
Q: What do you need for a delivery to an island?
A: The island, the ferry port and the postcode, plus whether the final address takes a forty-foot trailer or a smaller vehicle after the crossing. Island slots are booked, so we confirm the sailing before we confirm the date.
Q: Who registers for the Croatian packaging fee?
A: Whoever first places the packaged goods on the Croatian market. On a DDP shipment declared at Rijeka that is us as importer of record, reported against the MRN. On DDU, or on a Koper routing, it sits with the buyer.
Q: Does a Dubrovnik delivery still transit Bosnia?
A: Not by road since July 2022. The Pelješac Bridge connects the southern coast to the mainland, so a truck reaches Dubrovnik without the Neum corridor and the shipment stays within the European Union.
Get a DDP or DDU Figure for Croatia
Send the commodity, the delivery postcode or island name, and whether the buyer holds a Croatian PDV number. The reply starts with a routing decision, Rijeka entry or north Adriatic introduction, and the landed cost is built on whichever shape that decision produces.
