A cabin is hard to find! Car carrier orders scheduled until 2026

As the overseas popularity of domestically produced new energy vehicles continues to increase, the export of new energy vehicles has become an important force driving my country's automobile exports.

Data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers shows that from January to September this year, my country exported 3.388 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 60%. Among them, 825,000 new energy vehicles were exported, a year-on-year increase of 1.1 times.

Since the beginning of this year, the export of new energy vehicles has shown explosive growth. The traditional ro-ro ship shipping model has experienced tight routes and cabin space. It can be said that "it is hard to find a cabin."

Since the second half of 2022, my country's complete vehicle exports have continued to rise, but the sea transportation capacity of automobile exports has encountered a "bottleneck." In order to solve the problem of insufficient transportation capacity of export vehicles, Taicang Port cooperated with COSCO Shipping to design and develop a special frame for foldable commercial vehicles.

The growth in the export of new energy vehicles has made it difficult to find a cabin in international car transport ships. Shipping companies and car companies have begun to order ships, which has also ignited the shipbuilding industry. Due to the shortage of transportation capacity, international car shipping prices have risen.

It is understood that there are more than 700 car carriers worldwide, and the number operated by Chinese shipowners accounts for less than 10% of the world's total transport capacity. Compared with the continuous blowout of automobile exports, it is obvious that transportation capacity is seriously insufficient. In order to make up for this "shortcoming", many shipping companies and automobile manufacturing companies have begun to order ships.

On September 12 this year, the LNG dual-fuel car carrier built by Guangzhou Shipbuilding International, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, and China Shipbuilding Trading was signed for delivery. Currently, this company holds orders for 25 car carriers, and shipbuilding orders have been scheduled until 2026..
