How to handle the problem of overweight containers?

Samira Samira 2024-07-04 09:19:59

Sunny Worldwide LogisticsIt is a logistics company with more than 20 years of transportation experience, specializing in markets such as Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Southeast Asia. It is more of a cargo owner than a cargo owner~

The weight limit of the container itself

There is maximum weight information on the opening door of each container, such as MAX GROSS: 30480KGS. This means that your box including the contents cannot exceed this weight. Tare weight - 20GP: 2200KGS, 40: 3.720-4200KGS, some HQs will have MAX GROSS: 32000KGS.

This is the maximum strength that the container body can withstand. If loading exceeds this limit, the container may be deformed, the bottom plate may fall off, the top beam may be bent, and other damage may occur. All resulting losses will be borne by the loader. At present, most domestic professional container terminals have installed automatic weighbridges. Therefore, as long as the container loading exceeds the container weight limit, the terminal will refuse to accept the container. Therefore, it is recommended that you clearly read the weight limit on the container before packing to avoid unnecessary repacking operations.

If the goods are indeed overweight and cannot be divided, you can choose overweight boxes. There will be a weight selection fee added here. Generally, the terminals/yards will stack the shipping company's ordinary dry boxes together. If you want to choose a special weighted container (such as the 20-weighted container mentioned earlier), the terminals and yards must stack them one by one. Search, the resulting cabinet selection fee is generally the same as the designated cabinet fee.

Container transportation is a collaborative process involving multiple departments, so in addition to the weight limit of the container itself, there are some other factors that need to be considered.

Shipping company weight limit

Generally speaking, each shipping company has different weight policies. The approximate standard is that damaged containers are not used as the standard.

Consider the balance between cabin space and weight. Each container ship has certain space and weight restrictions, but on a certain route, space and weight are not always exactly balanced. Conflicts often occur in North China, where heavy cargoes are concentrated. The weight of the ship has already reached, but the space is much less. In order to make up for this loss of space, shipping companies often adopt a price increase strategy, that is, they charge additional freight after the cargo weight exceeds a certain number of tons..There are also shipping companies that do not use their own ships, but buy space from other shipping companies for transportation. The weight limit will be more stringent, because the purchase and sale of space between shipping companies are calculated according to the standard of 1TEU = 14TONS or 16TONS. , those exceeding the weight will not be allowed on board.

During the cabin explosion period, depending on the route's popularity, the shipping company's weight limit for each container type will be reduced accordingly.

When booking space, you should ask the freight forwarder about the shipping company's weight limit at the latest when shipping. If there is no confirmation and the goods are heavy goods, there will be risks. Some shipping companies will not have any room for communication after the goods are overweight, and directly ask the shipper to tow the goods, leave the port, unload the goods and then re-weigh the goods. These costs are difficult to control.

Port area weight limit

It mainly depends on the mechanical equipment load of terminals and yards.

After the container ship docks at the dock, it usually requires a crane at the dock to carry out loading and unloading operations, and then tows it to the container yard with a truck and then lifts it down with a forklift. If the weight of the container exceeds the mechanical load, it will cause difficulties in the operations of the terminal and the yard. Therefore, for some small ports with relatively backward equipment, shipping companies will generally inform the port of the weight limit in advance, and will not accept containers exceeding this limit.

Supporting feeder ship or highway weight limit

Anyone who has been to inland points in the United States knows very well that the road transportation weight limit in the United States is very strict, because many containers need to be towed inland by truck after being unloaded at the terminal, so the road weight limit also becomes a problem for shipping companies. Of course, the reason for limiting the weight of containers does not apply only to terminals.

The weight requirements for goods to the US line are very strict. The weight limit is mainly affected by the weight limit of the highway to the inland points of the United States. Generally, small containers are 17.3 tons and large high containers are 19.5 tons. However, different ports have different weight limit requirements.

Route weight limit

For different routes, the shipping capacity of shipping companies is arranged according to the order of cargo loading and unloading ports and the different types and popularity of cargo exports. In addition, due to the load problem of equipment operation at the destination port, the weight limits of large and small containers on different routes are naturally different.

What should I do if I am overweight?

This is mainly divided into port area overweight, shipping company overweight, and destination port overweight.

1. The shipping company is overweight

Discuss with the shipowner, pay the overweight fee, and proceed as normal for the rest;

2. The port area has its own regulations on overweight

If overweight is found when entering the port, you need to negotiate with the port area, pay the overweight fee plus labor handling fee, or unpack and repack;

3. Overweight at destination port

Generally, the overweight at the destination port can be settled within a certain range by paying a fine; if the overweight is serious, the crane along the way cannot load and can only be adjusted and unloaded at a nearby port or return to the original route.
