NO.1. The container shipping industry is facing a wave of capacity growth

The container shipping industry is facing a new wave of capacity growth. Relevant data show that as soon as 2025, the capacity of the global container fleet will exceed the 30 million TEU mark.

According to Clarksons data, 2 million TEUs of new capacity will be put into operation in 2023, 2.5 million TEUs will be added in 2024, and an additional 1.9 million TEUs will be added in 2025 according to preliminary estimates. By the end of 2025, the fleet is expected to reach 30 million TEU, an increase of more than 30% from early 2020 and 15% from current levels, Clarksons said.

The surge in capacity is mainly due to the delivery of a large number of large ships. Clarksons expects ships of 17,000 TEU and above to increase by 80% compared to early 2020 and by 16% this year alone. But at the same time, with the scrapping of small and old ships, the capacity of some ship types may shrink.

In this context, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) recently launched the Chongqing Orchard Port-Guangzhou Nansha Port international train. At the same time, it provides customers with multiple options for exporting from Nansha, and through sufficient space, the goods can be transported to all parts of the world more quickly and safely.

The COSCO SHIPPING Holdings QVS route has gradually realized comprehensive optimization and upgrading since the middle and late May.

◾The entire route has been upgraded to a 2000TEU container ship type, and the shipping capacity has been greatly enriched.

◾Optimize the port of call, speed up the operation efficiency of the ship, make the service more stable and efficient, and create a more high-quality and convenient path for the growing freezer export in the western region.

As of the end of June, all seven ships operated by the upgraded QVS route are fully loaded.

NO.5, air cargo demand in the Asia-Pacific region fell by 7%

According to the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), Asia-Pacific air cargo business continued to be affected by "subdued demand conditions driven by weak business confidence" in May.

Preliminary air cargo volume data for May showed air cargo demand, measured in freight tonne kilometers (FTK), fell 7% year-on-year in May. Offered capacity rose 6%, resulting in an 8.5 percentage point drop in the average international cargo load factor for the month to 60.1%.

AAPA Director General Subhas Menon said: “Air cargo demand remains weak, reflecting generally weak global economic conditions, particularly a slowdown in manufacturing.” Looking ahead, he added: “Trade tensions could will weigh on the cargo market for some time to come, while air travel demand is expected to show resilience despite headwinds in the external environment.”
