Bangladeshi truck drivers plan a general strike that will hit Chittagong hard

Truck drivers, van drivers and tractor drivers, three major groups that ferry goods and containers to and from Chittagong across Bangladesh, are planning a strike later this month to meet their various demands.

The Bangladesh Trucking Owners Association and the Bangladesh Teamsters Federation have called for a 72-hour strike from September 21 to meet their 15-point demands.

Also, Bangladesh truck-covered vans tank main porters Coordination Department Parishad called a strike from September 27 to meet their 10-point demands.

In the past few weeks, the groups have been airing their grievances in a variety of ways across the country, including forming human resource chains and gathering in front of the National Press Club in the capital.

The strike representative Rustam Ali Khan told the rally that unless the demands were met by September 27, they would stick to their agreement to strike.

These include removing the complexity of issuing permits, taking effective measures to stop theft in the transport of goods, stopping police harassment and extortion in the name of inspection of goods, repealing the increase in income tax, and establishing truck terminals with modern facilities on highways and in districts.

Other groups have also called for a strike to start on September 21. They have put forward 15 demands, including the creation of good working conditions, necessary amendments to the 2018 Road Transport Law and the elimination of income tax on car owners.

Traders say if truckers go on strike action, the movement of all kinds of goods and boxes will stop and supply chains will collapse, causing severe chaos.

In Bangladesh, truck drivers, van drivers and tractor drivers transport a large proportion of domestic goods and a large proportion of imports and exports.

In a typical 24 hour period, about 8,000 teU of goods are exported from Chittagong and the port receives about the same number of boxes, while about 4,000 trucks enter the port every day to transport goods and containers. It is feared that a strike would halt all these operations.

"Any transport strike will hit us hard as factories and businesses are now open for business after a long period of supply disruptions related to the epidemic." "Said Ashraf Ali, a dhaka-based trader.

He argued that in the interest of trade and commerce, the government should sit down with truck workers and owners to resolve the impasse.

Abul Kalam Azad, owner of a garment factory in Narayanganji, said buyers had placed large orders as the global pandemic eased.

"Factories are under tremendous pressure to get goods ready and on time to ship, and any disruption at this point in time will hinder the recovery." Azad said, calling for negotiations with the government to call off the strike.
