In view of the continued tension in the Black Sea region and the significant escalation of security risks in the Middle East, Maersk recently announced that,The route services at the port of Chornomorsk in Ukraine have been suspended indefinitely, and some land transportation bookings in the Red Sea-Middle East region have been suspended.To reduce operational safety risks and ensure the safety of cargo transportation.

Maersk pointed out in a notice to customers that due to the continued deterioration of the security situation in the relevant operating areas, its cooperative feeder carriers are no longer able to continue to provide transportation services to and from Ukraine via the Chornomorsk fishing port, so they have decided to suspend the route to the port. The resumption time will be notified separately.

The specific arrangements for import and export goods involved in this adjustment are as follows:

Import:The cargo originally planned to be transported by the Turkish feeder ship "MEDKON MIRA" (voyage V.629S) to the fishing port of Chornomorsk will be transferred to the Port of Constanta in Romania for unloading. For goods that have arrived or are expected to arrive in Port Said, Egypt, and the original destination port is Chornomorsk, they will be handled by Constanta Port in accordance with the relevant terms of the bill of lading. If the customer cannot accept the above new unloading port arrangement, he or she can apply to Maersk to change the final destination.

Export:For goods that have been booked but not yet shipped, the booking can be canceled free of charge without incurring cancellation or modification fees; containers that have entered the port can be adjusted to Constanta Port for loading, and the original ocean freight rate will be used. The subsequent inland transportation plan, transportation timeliness and related costs from Romania to Ukraine will be confirmed by Maersk's local team and customers one by one.

It should be noted that this suspension is limited to the fishing port route of Chornomorsk and does not involve deep-water commercial ports in the region. According to Ukrainian news, the deep-water port of Chornomorsk and ports around Odessa are still operating normally. The fishing port is an independent operating facility, and its operation interruption will not affect commercial port operations.

Recently, the security situation in the Black Sea region has deteriorated significantly, with port infrastructure and merchant ships subject to frequent military attacks. International shipping companies are continuing to reassess the operational risks in the region.

Before Maersk announced the suspension of services, Kernel Holding, a large Ukrainian grain export company, had suspended operations related to the main port of Chornomorsk due to continuous attacks on the port. Maersk thus became the second large international company to withdraw from operations in the port this month.

Currently, Russia and Ukraine continue to increase their military strikes against targets in the Black Sea and Sea of ​​Azov. Russia claims that its attack scope covers ships transporting military supplies and port facilities; Ukraine continues to counterattack Russian ships, and maritime conflicts between the two sides are intensifying.

On the evening of July 22, the bulk carrier "Golden Rose" flying the flag of St. Kitts and Nevis caught fire during an attack. All 16 crew members on board were rescued, and no serious injuries were reported. In the previous week, several other merchant ships were attacked one after another, and some crew members were injured or killed, further raising the risk level of commercial shipping in the Black Sea.

Market analysts believe that continued missile and drone attacks have had a significant impact on Ukraine’s grain exports. At present, the grain export capacity of Black Sea ports has dropped by about one-third compared with before, and some cargo owners have begun to switch to alternative routes such as Danube inland river transportation to spread transportation risks.

In addition to the adjustment of the Black Sea route, Maersk has also made simultaneous adjustments to the Middle East regional transportation network. On July 22, the company announced the suspension of multiple land transportation bookings involving the Red Sea and Gulf areas, including:

• Transportation business in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar via Jeddah Port and Oman Port;

• Transportation business from Jeddah Port to the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Qatar;

• Land transportation business from Salalah Port and Sohar Port to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar.

The direct background of the above adjustments is that the security situation in the Middle East is tightening again. The situation between the United States and Iran has continued to escalate recently. The Houthi armed forces in Yemen announced the expansion of the scope of military operations against Saudi-related maritime targets, claiming to have attacked two Saudi oil tankers and forced about 10 merchant ships to change their routes and return. The risk of shipping in the Red Sea has further increased.

Industry insiders pointed out that as the security situation in the two key shipping areas of the Black Sea and the Red Sea continues to deteriorate, international liner companies are constantly adjusting route layouts and transportation plans to minimize the safety threats to personnel and cargo.
