Sunny Worldwide LogisticsIt is a logistics company with more than 20 years of transportation experience, specializing in Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, Southeast Asia and other markets. It is more of a cargo owner than a cargo owner~

According to the latest data from Alphaliner, there are a total of 6,789 container ships in operation around the world (5,984 of which are pure container ships), with a total transport capacity of 28.57 million TEU, equivalent to approximately 340 million deadweight tons.

In the year from January 1, 2023 to January 1, 2024, the number of global container ships increased by 271, and the shipping capacity increased by 2.14 million TEU, a year-on-year increase of 8.2%. The wave of orders during the epidemic is still being delivered.

According to Alphaliner data, the top twelve liner companies are: Mediterranean Shipping Company (No. 1), Maersk Line (No. 2), CMA CGM (No. 3), COSCO Shipping Lines (No. 4), Hapag-Lloyd (No. 5) , ONE (6th), Evergreen Line (7th), HMM (8th), Yang Ming Marine Lines (9th), ZIM Lines (10th), Wan Hai Lines (11th), PIL (11th), 12).

Among them, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is the leader in global fleet expansion in 2023. The company received a total of 14 ultra-large container ships of 24,000TEU and 26 new Panamax ships ranging from 15,250 to 16,550TEU last year.

This means that MSC has added more than 1 million TEU of capacity in the past 12 months alone, accounting for 47.4% of the global capacity increase, and its added capacity in one year alone is enough to rank eighth in the global rankings.

It is understood that after taking delivery of a 16,550TEU new ship named MSC ORSOLA on January 4, the shipping capacity controlled by MSC has reached an astonishing 5,649,028TEU. Compared with Maersk’s current 4,139,473TEU, it is 1,509,555TEU more.

The capacity difference of 1.5 million TEU is almost equal to the capacity controlled by Evergreen Marine Corp., currently ranked seventh in the world. It is more than the combined capacity of HMM (783,732TEU), which ranks eighth in the world, and Yang Ming Shipping (708,591TEU), which ranks ninth in the world.

In contrast, the capacity performance of second-ranked Maersk (MSK) was slightly sluggish. Maersk fleet capacity decreased by 112,500 TEU (-2.7%) last year. In terms of new ships, Maersk’s new ship orders are not large, with only 36 ships, equivalent to a transport capacity of 453,000 TEU.

The shipping capacity of CMA CGM has not only increased by 5.4% in 2023, but also currently holds orders for 110 new ships, with a new ship capacity equivalent to 1.2 million TEU. Therefore, CMA CGM is still expected to surpass Maersk in the future and become the world's second largest container shipping company.
