Samira Samira 2024-08-14 16:50:26

Sunny Worldwide LogisticsIt is a logistics company with more than 20 years of transportation experience, specializing in markets such as Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Southeast Asia. It is more of a cargo owner than a cargo owner~

In the early morning of August 11, local time, an explosion occurred under the deck of the MSC container ship "MSC CAPETOWN III" while it was berthing at the JCT Terminal of the Port of Colombo, followed by a fire.

Relevant departments acted quickly and successfully averted a bigger disaster. So far, no casualties have been reported.

It is reported that the 18-year-old container ship was undergoing loading and unloading operations when the accident occurred.Unloading 995TEU, loading 880TEU.

At around 0:30, a fire broke out in the hatch area near the dormitory.

The fire originated from approximately 100 containers in the cabin and 60 containers on the deck, and occurred in the 41/43 hatch area. The fire eventually escalated into an explosion.

The explosion occurred below deck, where cargo had been unloaded and one of the containers contained dangerous goods.

All operating personnel and auxiliary crew members were immediately evacuated from the ship, and the Colombo Port's fire brigade immediately took action, responded quickly and effectively controlled the fire, and ultimately successfully extinguished the fire and safely transferred the affected cargo.

No casualties have been reported so far.The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

In response to the fire, SLPA Chairman Keith D. Bernard said that a comprehensive investigation process will be launched to identify the specific cause of the fire and promised to prepare a detailed investigation report.

At the same time, he also emphasized his attitude of holding relevant shipping agencies accountable. In addition, insurance companies will also intervene in the investigation. To assess losses and handle subsequent insurance claims.

MSC CAPETOWN III container ship, a Portuguese ship built in 2006, is now operated and managed by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

The ship is 222 meters long, 30 meters wide and has a carrying capacity of 2824TEU. Before the incident, the ship had just arrived at the Port of Colombo from Singapore and was originally scheduled to unload 995 containers and load 885 new containers at JCT4 Terminal.

It is still uncertain whether this accident will have an impact on the subsequent shipping schedule of MSC CAPETOWN III.

This incident will once againDangerous goods handling and container ship safety management issuesbrought into public view.

Recently, due to high temperatures and other severe weather, ship fire accidents have continued to occur. In July, the Maersk Frankfurt exploded and caught fire while sailing, killing one sailor.

It is worth noting that this is the second fire or explosion on a port container ship worldwide in three days.

Previously, on August 9, Yang Ming Shipping's "YM Mobility" also encountered an explosion and fire caused by items in the container while berthing at Ningbo Port.

These accidents further highlight the urgency of strengthening port safety management and supervision of dangerous goods transportation.

We would like to warmly remind all relevant parties that it is necessary to strengthen the management of flammable, explosive and dangerous goods that require temperature control, and strengthen safety awareness and shipboard operating regulations.Ensure safe transportation and have a safe summer.
