Significant changes in the shipping market!

Significant changes in the shipping market!

Esther souhang 2021-04-08 17:01:10

In March of this year, 45 new ULC orders (ultra-large container ships exceeding 15,000 TEU) were added globally, breaking the historical record. In addition to the 27 new orders for container ships with a smaller capacity in March, the total capacity of the new orders has reached 866,060 TEU, marking a major change in the container shipping industry.

This change allows us to see the current level of confidence in the industry by shipowners and investors. Statistics show that a total of 995,000 TEUs of container ship capacity was added last year, and the order volume in the first quarter of this year reached 1.398 million TEUs, a 6-year high.
Peter Sand, chief shipping analyst at BIMCO, said: If ultra-large container ships can make full use of their cargo capacity in actual operations, the industry will benefit from economies of scale.
In October and December last year, almost all orders were 23000-24000TEU ships, and only 4 of the 23 ULC orders were not in this range. Of the 81 orders with a container capacity of more than 11,800 TEU so far this year, only 4 have more than 15,500 TEU.
Sand pointed out: In the Suez Canal blockage incident, the operation of ultra-large container ships was questioned because some people believe that blindly pursuing large-scale will affect the reliability of the supply chain, the best navigation status and safety of the ship. But I don’t think there will be a major change in the large-scale ship, because in the competition of the container shipping industry to continuously improve its long-term profitability, ultra-large container ships are the first choice for ‘weapons’.
