The winter solstice, also known as the short day solstice, winter festival and sub year, has two connotations of nature and humanity. It is not only an important solar term in the 24 solar terms, but also a traditional Chinese Folk Festival, which is regarded as a major winter festival.

In ancient times, there is a saying that the winter solstice is as big as the year. In ancient times, people floating in other places all had to go home for the winter festival at this time of the year. In ancient times, there was a saying of "Yang Sheng on the winter solstice". That is to say, from that day on the winter solstice, Yang Qi began to rise slowly.

Winter solstice customs vary in content and details due to different regions. In southern China, there is a custom of offering sacrifices to ancestors and feasting on the winter solstice. In northern China, it is customary to eat dumplings on the winter solstice every year.

Winter solstice custom

1、 Eat dumplings

As the old saying goes, "on October 1, when the winter solstice arrives, every family eats dumplings. "It can be seen that eating dumplings on the winter solstice is an indispensable custom. Zhang Zhongjing, the "sage of medicine", was once the prefect of Changsha. After leaving his official post and returning to his hometown, he saw that the villagers were yellow and thin, hungry and cold, and many people's ears were frozen and rotten. So he ordered his disciples to set up a stove, boil the mutton and herbal medicine in the pot, and then take them out and cut them into pieces. Then they made "Jiaoer ears" like ears with bread. After they were cooked, they were given to those who came to ask for medicine. After eating, people were warm all over, their ears were hot, and their frostbitten ears were cured. Later generations learned the appearance of "Jiaoer", and wrapped it into food, which was called "Jiaozi".

Old Beijing eat chaos, old Beijing has "winter solstice wonton and summer solstice noodles". It is said that in the Han Dynasty, the northern Xiongnu often harassed the frontier, and the people were not peaceful. At that time, Hun clan and Tun clan were two leaders of Xiongnu tribe. People hate it to the bone, so they use meat stuffing to form a corner, take the sound of "Hun" and "Tun", and call it "wonton". Hate to eat it, and to quell the war, can live a peaceful life. Because wonton was originally made on the winter solstice, every family eats wonton on the winter solstice. There is a northern people eat chaos, southerners eat dumplings custom.

2、 Jiujiu Xiaohan

The next day of the winter solstice begins to count nine, which is what people call "Ti Dong Shu Jiu". If you count nine days, it's nineteen. If you count nine days, it's twenty-nine. And so on. If you count to nine, you'll be done with nine. It was warm at that time. After entering the Ninth Festival, the literati engaged in the so-called cold elimination activities. They chose a "Nine" day and asked nine people to drink (wine and nine are homonyms). Nine dishes and nine bowls were used on the table, and the "flower nine pieces" table was used to express the meaning of "Jiu Jiu Xiao Han".

3、 Offering sacrifices to heaven and ancestors

Many areas have the custom of offering sacrifices to heaven and ancestors on the winter solstice, but there are still some places celebrating the winter solstice. Every family provides genealogy, ancestral portraits, memorial tablets, etc. in the upper Hall of their home, places offering tables, incense burners and offerings. At the same time, some places also offer sacrifices to the gods of heaven and earth, and worship the gods to pray for good weather and prosperity in the coming year.
