Port of Long Beach sees modest cargo volume performance during peak season
Realizations during the annual "peak" shipping season have been rather muted at the Port of Long Beach as warehouse inventory piles up and consumer demand continues to shift toward travel and other summer activities.
Last month, longshoremen and terminal operators in Long Beach moved 682,312 TEUs, a 15.4% decrease from August 2022. The number of empty containers passing through California ports fell 12.5% to 263,474 TEU. According to the port’s announcement, cargo volumes this year are still comparable to pre-pandemic levels.
"As our cargo volumes continue to stabilize at pre-pandemic levels, we anticipate a moderate peak season," Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero said.

The average time container ships at major ports spend in port and berthed (2.09 days, 1.69 days).
The operating efficiency of major European and American ports has fluctuated. Among them, the average length of stay of ships in the Port of Hamburg in Europe was 2.16 days, an increase of 7.5% from the previous month; the average stay of ships in the Port of Los Angeles, a major port in the West United States, was 3.91 days, a decrease of 1.3% from the previous month; the average stay time of ships in the Port of Long Beach was 5.22 days.
