2M reduces calls in Auckland, and the latest situation in Yantian, Shekou, and Chiwan, major terminals in South China

In recent months, the container market has been affected by delays, bottlenecks in multiple ports and high freight rates. The arrival of the peak season will further aggravate the already difficult situation.
The congestion of European and American ports has caused many shipping companies to announce port jumps at many important European ports. On the west coast of the United States, it is reported that the 2M alliance composed of Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) will change its TP8/Orient service at the Port of Oakland. Docking frequency.
MSC said in a statement that due to the current challenging market situation affecting port activities and causing congestion in the entire supply chain, the TP8/Orient service will call at the Port of Oakland in the United States once every two weeks.
This change will take effect in Asia from the 28th week (July 12 to 18) and is aimed at improving the reliability of shipping schedules. The first cancellation of TP8/Orient service at the Port of Oakland is the 10,600TEU "Cap San Juan" vessel, which is expected to arrive in Oakland on August 7. The vessel will call in the following order: Qingdao-Shanghai-Ningbo-Busan-Long Beach.

In Asia, since June 24th, all 20 berths of Yantian International have resumed operations. The current daily throughput is nearly 40,000 TEUs, and the number of scheduled export heavy containers has reached 11,000 per day. Major liner companies call Yantian Port. The regional routes returned to normal, and three new American routes CAWE6, PCC3, and USEC8 came to call.

According to Maersk’s report to its customers on July 2 of the situation at Yantian Port, the port’s outbreak at the end of May affected approximately 80 ships and 19 mainline service schedules in the 2M alliance formed with MSC. With the current situation at the port It is improving and Maersk is beginning to resume its service at the port.

“The yard density has dropped to 65%, and the overall productivity has been pushed up to 85% of the normal level. The congestion in Yantian is alleviating, but when a port is affected, the efficiency of neighboring ports may fall into a spiral decline.” Maersk said.

Yard density and waiting time

With the recovery of Yantian Port, the neighboring ports are still under pressure. Maersk pointed out that terminal congestion and vessel waiting time in other major ports in the region are still affected by the chain reaction of vessel diversions. With frequent changes in shipping routes, more and more ships choose Hong Kong as their preferred port for transshipment. Currently, Hong Kong’s yard density is 93% and it takes three days to berth, while Shekou’s yard density is 100%, requiring waiting 3.5 days.

In addition, the conditions of Chiwan, Shekou and other terminals are as follows:
SCT/CCT/MCT on the appointment of the gate operation notice

As the peak season for trade routes from Asia to North America approaches, the shortage of containers has intensified, and short-haul routes outside Asia have begun to experience premiums. A freight forwarder said: “Because the carrier deploys a large amount of capacity on the routes from North Asia to Europe and the United States, it is very difficult to transport containers within Asia. Although there is no shortage of 20-foot containers, we still have to pay premiums.”
